  • I've just got my cashback from Capital One £127.93 + my DH got £102.39 on his last statment. I'm now looking for a new card and was thinking of an Amex. Is it smaller outlets that don't accept it? I assume the supermarkets and highstreet chain stores etc. do?

There is a thread on here about who does/does not accept AMEX.

I just got fed up with operating 2 cards.
I had some smaller retailers ask me not to use it even though they did accept it which I found a little embarrassing.
I always to minimise the cards I use for fraud and just find it easier to operate 2, but if you don't mind paying 2 bills and carrying 2 cards then I guess it's not a big deal.

Often companies that impose charges (like holiday companies) will make a much higher charge for AMEX e.g. I've been on cruises before where it's been 3% for via/mastercard and 6% for AMEX, so the charges are really quite high for retailers.
  • Egg Money are offering 3% instant cashback for purchases at dixons online. Would I still get the normal 1% cashback for an item bought there in addition to the instant 3% or just the 3%?

If it's just the 3% I'd be better off (by 1%) to go via quidco.

    TIA.

I have just received a letter from the Yorkshire Building Society saying that from 1 April 2008 cash-back payments will be 1p for every £2 spent, instead of £1. Then from 1 April 2009 no cash-back will be paid at all. So this seems to be the end of yet another cash-back deal.

Just applied for a Capital One 4%/1% card and they said that since I have a 0.5% card with them then I am not eligible. Asked them to upgrade my 0.5% card to 1% (foregoing the 4% for 3 months) and they refused. Said that if I want a 1% card then I have to cancel my current card and then apply for the 1% card but there is no guarantee that I will be accepted!!!!

Seems primary school logic to me. Telling an existing customer, whose credit history they are aware of, to cancel the card they have and possibly not be accepted for another!!! Staggering. What happened to loyalty to existing customers????

What other 1% cashback cards could I look at??

I just had a letter to say my Egg cashback card is being withdrawn. They must be tightening their criteria as my credit record hasnt changed and I always apy the balance off every month.

Guess I need another credit card now.

It is curious dkb but on the news Egg say they are withdrawing the cards from 'at risk customers' - could be those of you who do pay off the ballance every money are 'at risk' of not making them any money:eek:

This was exactly what they were saying on today's edition of Moneybox on Radio 4. Quite a few people who are having their cards cancelled have contacted the programme saying that they haven't got poor credit histories . Their only "crime" seems to be that they always pay of their balance every month. The BBC did contact Egg and put this point to them, but the company deny this is the case.

  • I have a couple of questions.

Mr MoneyDummy recently applied for the AMEX 5% cashback CC for 3mnths with myself as an additional cardholder and I hopefully will be doing this in a couple of months when this period runs out. Unfortunately, neither of us have a VISA/MC cashback card yet. We are just beginners at this!!

    My questions are:

    1. As I have just missed the Capital One 4% cashback offer, what is the next best VISA/MC cashback card for all purchases (I have a college course I need to pay for)?
    2. If I apply for this VISA/MC cashback card now, how will this effect my credit score when I come to apply for the AMEX cashback card in a couple of months (if it is still available!)?
    3. With everyone tightening their belts and cashback offers disappearing, I guess it would be sensible to apply for a VISA/MC cashback card now and not wait to see if any more great offers appear?

    Any advice??

I've just applied for the 1% cash back Capital one card and was declined. I have an excellent credit record, I have a mortgage (joint with husband) and a small loan (never missed payments on either). A mastercard and visa (never missed payments on those and always pay in full) My husband applied for one and was accepted straight away. He only has a visa card. I didn't want to be the second card holder on his, as we have separate current accounts with different banks (never bothered to change them and each happy with own bank) and want to be able to pay off our own cards from our own accounts.
Just applied for an Eggmoney card instead and accepted straight away, though I'd rather have the capital one card for the ID theft protection.

Anyone have any possible explanation? Is it worth appealing? I noticed several people have also been declined by CO.
    Thanks
    Mikk
