Can someone enlighten me on this 'cash advance' business? What is it?
If you pay for "purchases" e.g. buying clothes, goods etc. then you get a number of interest free days.
This means that if you clear your bill in time you don't pay any interest.

If you get a "cash advance" then you pay interest from the day you take it out.
Interest rates are high so it's not a sensible way to borrow money.

A "cash advance" would defnitely be taking cash from a cash machine.
It would also include foreign cash abroad.
Foreign cash (in somewhere like Thomas Cook or Marks & Spenders).
Some on-line betting services are also considered cash.

However if you buy "goods" e.g. something physical like clothes, food, DVD player, then it's a purchase.

You'd have to read your terms and conditions for an exact definition, but generally purchases refers to "things" and cash refers to money.

If in doubt, check up front as the interest rates are high.

    1.5% Petrol/Supermarket spends
    0.5% everything else

not 2% ive had the card for months, they never offered 2%...
please comment if you also feel confused, it is very misleading!

 Now, I'm utterly confused. Does Barclaycard platiinum give 2% cashback of food/fuel or not ? It says clearly in their terms and conditions that it does (http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/products/apply/cashbacktandc.html), but the above post says not. Can anybody who has got the card confirm ? thanks

I don't have the card but when I looked at it a few months back my understanding was that the way it worked was
    1.5% Petrol/Supermarket spends
    0.5% everything

    Therefore on supermarket/petrol you get it as 1.5 + 0.5 = 2%

Does anyone else know another credit card which gives monthly cashback directly off your statement?????

    Abbey.

5% off. Supermarkets only. Limited period - ends later this year. £50 maximum payback total.
However hard up you are, never accept loans from your friends. Just gifts
  • Egg Money seem to be a bit confused about cash advances: The no interest rule only applies if you buy goods or services in Uk. If you use your card abroad all purchases are charged interest.....in addition to fees, from date of purchase. Any tips for a good cashback credit card to use abroad????

OK! I'm going for the 4% cashback capital one card!
I've got a big orthodontic bill coming for my daughter so thought 4% cashback on £1500 would be a damn good idea!
I don't think I have any 'credit history' apart from an old HP load(paid) and an Alliance & Leicester card which they closed cos I never used it!
I don't hold out much hope of being accepted??

Can someone enlighten me on this 'cash advance' business? What is it?

Are you sure the orthodontist will accept a credit card? My dental surgery will only accept debit cards, NOT credit cards, so it is worth checking.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

    Don't know of any.
Nationwide is very good abroad as it's 0% commission but they don't pay cashback on foreign purchases.

I'm not aware of one that doesn't charge commission and gives you cashback as well.

Best tend to depend somewhat on circumstances but I'd say capital one is pretty cood.
However be aware is it being withdrawn VERY soon (do a search, someone put the date up on another thread I think).

EDIT: It's here and being withdrawn TODAY.

It's 4% for 3 months and then 1% after that.
Cashback is paid in Jan so you'll have to wait nearly a year for it as it's very recently been paid.
It's good if you can time your annual holiday and annual insurances on it.

There are some higher rate cards but in general only for food and petrol.
There is also an AMEX one, but you can be limited as to where you can use that.

My view is that Capital one is the best but it does depend on what you spend your money on and whether the retailers you shop with use AMEX.
I found the refusals I got with Amex to be a bit embarrassed and I'm not easily shocked. Too much hassle to have to operate many cards and carry them in case people don't accept it.
