Like lisyloo I pay my balance off every month and given my previous history of credit cards (i.e. affiliations of capital 1) they would have known this when I applied .. and got accepted. Is it possible you failed on one of the other criteria?
    • have a credit card with a credit limit of at least £5000
    • I have had a credit card(s) for at least 5 years
    • I have never missed more than 2 payments on a credit card or loan
    • I have credit card balances of less than £10,000
    • I don't have any previous credit defaults (CCJs, current arrears)
Alternatively maybe they have decided that you have one credit card too many already ?

As I have mentioned before don't take it personally, many companies are turning down upwards of 50% of applicants for credit. For years people have been blaming anks and credit comapnies for irresponsible lending ... now when they start acting in a (questionably) more responsible manner we are still complaining. Which way round do we want it?

I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • Nope, I can tick all those boxes, and only have one credit card that's used; I do have a Barclays Premier (Charge) Card, but that hasn't been touched for years as it's actually there to secure an overdraft facility (which I also haven't actually used).
  • There is a catch with Capital1 4% cashback - it is only paid once a year. I was paid in December 2007 soon after taking out their card. The nect time I will be paid casback is in 11 months time. That's certainly not in Capital1's advertising. I rang Capital1 and was told that I should have read the small print!.

    GRRRRRRRR!!!
  • I'm hoping this is like a quick questions thread :) I applied for the AMEX platinum card on the 10th Jan and haven't heard anything back about it, either by email or by post. Anyone know how long it typically takes? I'm always a bit paranoid that the letter has gone missing in the post. If anyone remembers how long it took till they heard I'd be really grateful :)

but wondered if there were similar but legal tips people knew of ?

    Nothing stunning but

    1) Put your annual holiday on it if you can (you can voluntarily pay in advance).
    2) Sort out annual insurances early e.g. house, car, if you can.
    3) Put all business expenses through it.
    4) Buy vouchers on it e.g. John Lewis vouchers in waitrose came up as a purchase and not a cash advance. You need to be careful here, but it worked for me. Maybe start with a small amount to check first.

If I bought a car using my newly aquired Capital One Cashback card, for £16000 would I get 4% cashback on that purchase? (would I be able to transfer £16000 of cash to the card before making the purchase, to put the card in a positive balance?)
  • One tip on getting the Amex cashback card - if you go through Quidco, they are giving £10 cashback just for clicking on their link.

Yes, but I would expect the car dealer to want to pass on at least some of his fees.
Car dealers often do not allow you to pay by credit card for this reason.
It will clearly only be worthwhile if the fees are less than 4%.
would I be able to transfer £16000 of cash to the card before making the purchase, to put the card in a positive balance?
Yes, you can do this but be aware that your money might not be insured, so if it gets stolen by fradulent use of your card then you might find that Capital One's insurance doesn't cover this. (I don't know in this specific case but I know of other card companies that do not insure credi balances).

Another idea is to pay the card dealer in installements.
I'm sure they won't mind you paying in advance and provided you have a receipt then there's no issue with this.

The main issue will be the fees.
The car dealer will be unlikely to want to pay the fees themselves unless they are absolutely desperate for the sale.
Of course if they agree 2% fees then it might still be worthwhile.
I've certainly done this for holidays (and you get 4% on your 2% fees as a bonus).
