I cannot point to legislation but i can point to Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose Asda who are successful supermarkets who take credit cards.

So why not shop at Tesco, Morrisons or Waitrose Asda instead of Aldi?

Let me guess, because your average bill will be less at Aldi compared to the big four supermarkets? So therefore those big four supermarkets are making more profit and thus are willing to take a hit to provide support for credit cards.

Considering that Tesco have 30% market share, they can also afford to run their own payment processing centre, further reducing costs.

and you forgot Sainsburys with 16.6% of the market.

The typical demographic that uses Aldi to shop (for everything) are not the demographic that typically have wallets full of credit cards.
Why full? I think most Aldi customers have at least one.

Anyway, it's always been beyond me why people keep carrying huge wallets full of cards on them. Two are fine for me. The rest stay at home pulled together by a rubber band.
  • I am beginning to wonder if the OP is related to some of the posters lately who have had 'bad' (LOL!) experiences at Subway, Premier Inn and the Coop?

I'd agree with you here in the UK, although I still seem to end up carrying tons. I do try and cut down when I go abroad though.

When I was living in the US, I'd often have cash back cards that had different rates on different things. I think I had a Chase card that had about 5% cash back on Dining and a Discover Card that had a 5% cash back rate on fuel (Changed every quarter) and an Amex that got 4% on supermarkets etc. Made much more sense then (Also very confusing lol!).

Costco don't take credit cards either and years ago M&S didn't. You could only pay by cash, cheque or store card.
Aldi are obviously doing ok without taking credit cards, surely it's up to them whether they do or not?

because Amex is a different agreement.

when a retailer starts to accept Credit cards, they will be offered the standard agreement that will cover Visa and Mastercard, but they they will be offered another agreement if they want to accept Amex which is a higher % rate.
  • Local corner shop charges 50p if you want to pay by card. LOL.
  • I can remember my first job at Sainsbury's back in the early nineties where they didn't accept credit cards as the Chief Exec believed that people shouldn't be buying food on credit - unfortunately they had to move with the times.

Its well known that stores like Lidl and Aldi don't do credit cards because of the fees and don't do manufacturers coupons.

Tesco don't even claim the value of the coupons which can take time - they have the power to knock off the value of the coupons off the suppliers invoice.

Put it this way with credit card charges a recent survey showed that if you went to a petrol station and paid for £10 of fuel with a credit card the owner of the station would make a loss. But if the person also bought a bar of chocolate he would make a small profit.
  • Lidl don't accept credit cards in any of their stores I've been to either. Get over it!
Current debt: M&S £0(£2K) , Tesco £0 (£1.5K), Car loan 6K (paid off!) Barclaycard £1.5K (interest free for 18 months)
