A simple and probably unnecessary moan about family.

Every Christmas, members of my family descend upon my house, not to see me but to see my mum. As my house is bigger than mum's they use this place as base camp. They don't pay anything or compensate me in any way for the intrusion - they simply expect it (one year they didn't even clean up after themselves and I found a used condom lying on the rim of a bin... delightful). I've tolerated this because it makes my mum happy to see family members that she doesn't often see; although I would be lying if I didn't say I slightly resented it as well.
Please tell us the new Mrs Tropez isn't going to be expected to cope with this from next year on?0 -
Are these people your siblings? If so, were they unaware you were getting married? And were they not to be invited? (at their own expense obviously)
As they like to remind me at every opportunity, we are related via legal order only. I am adopted.
They have behaved appallingly towards me since I was a child and have never made it any secret that they have nothing but contempt for me. One of them has effectively admitted that they see me as someone who will be taking part of their inheritance from them.
As a result, no they were not told about my wedding nor would they be getting invited. I tolerate them as much as I have to in order to keep my mother happy but other than that I feel emotionally closer to the vegetable soup I had for lunch.0 -

The future Mrs Tropez is very good at dealing with awkward people and in years gone by has helped me better deal with them; usually through romantic trips out of the house and consumption of alcohol.
She regards my family as actually quite easy to deal with compared to her own.0 -
Well I suggest from now on you have new traditions,
its your house
your life
and if they cant be bothered to communicate the other 364 days of year and so vile its no lose.
Lifes too short why should you put up with such vile behaviour in your own house?:A :j0 -

Because as you say life's too short and I've already seen my dad die; might as well make as much of my mum's life as happy as possible, even if it is dealing with folks who dislike me!

Wow , I could not have had people at mine to whom I feel Luke that ,mum or noum. They can stay at hers or a hotel or invite her to theirs or have.holidays together - whatever . My house is for people I like and trust, not for ones I would not even invited for my wedding. The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.0 -
You shouldn't have written to let them know your plans. Think of the laugh you could have had in the Usa looking at your watch and thinking they'll just about be arriving to find the house all locked up and deserted.
They'd probably have done a Keith Lemon and broken in and wrecked the joint :rotfl:0 -

To be fair though hardly anyone is invited to my wedding. Too expensive.

Sounds to me like this wedding is a blessing in disguise. Surely this means an end to this once a year nonsense? I'd no more have these people in my house than I'd invite Attila the Hun over for a spot of lunch (ok, perhaps that's a bit dramatic, not to mention impossible but you catch my drift).:A

You're obviously much more tolerant than I am, Tropez! :A
Under no circumstances would those people be staying in my home. Ever. They are not bothered about your mother, otherwise they would contact her at other times too. They use you as a free holiday! Don't allow yourself to be used - please![0
