reminds me of the 1st episode of Friends, where the man pretends he hasnt has sex since he split from wife/partner and the question is asked 'why would he say that?' ....to get you into bed

I know people will find this hard to believe but this is actually what is happening. I have received many emails in the middle of the night when he is working from home, which he prefers to being in bed with his wife.

Or he could be emailing you from bed. He could by lying there right next to his wife and writing to you about how much he loves you and what a horrible, horrible person she is.

You can't really be this naive.
