    Right, still would help if we knew if this was Virgin broadband via a cabled network work or Virgin Broadband via ADSL over a BT landline.

    How many computers do you have hooked up, if more than one are the others working fine and how are they connected.

    Right sounds like you have cable broadband.

    Are you xNTL or xTelewest area?

    Is the router a cable router and not an ADSL modem/router (have to ask!)

    Does the laptop have a wired Ethernet network port?

    It's best to try and get that working first.

    Switch modem off, laptop off and router off.

    Ensure modem is connected to the WAN/Internet port on the router
    Then hard-wire connect the router to the laptop.

    Switch on modem, wait about 20 - 30 seconds.
    Switched on router, wait about 20 - 30 seconds.
    Then switch on the laptop.

    See where you get with that first.

    its via the virgin media modem which was installed with the TV and phone line (from virgin)

    this is the only computer hooked up.

    this is a stupid question but does the modem still need to be connected to the phone socket if its a cable modem from virgin, (ive had broadband from AOL before but not from virgin)

    its in the telewest area.

    it does have a wired connection aswell, i will try that and see how it goes.

    if this doesnt work, any ideas what it could be?

    Right, yeah xTelewest cable broadband doesn't need the phone line it uses the same co-ax that's split to the digital TV box.

    Could be a few things, but best to see if connecting wired will work first.

    Have you not had any connection, did you first try with just the modem hard wired (did that work) before moving onto using a router too.

    This router you are using is it one supplied by Virgin, was it one you bought for cable or was it one you have for AOL?

    No ive not had a connection since ive had it, no ive not tried it without using the router. i will try it without the router. and see what happens.

    the router was bought for using with the laptop for cable. im not sure of the make/model/type as it's at home (i'm at work)

    I had a fault with my virgin broadband and flatly refused to call the 0906 number.
    I spoke to customer services, stated that I would rather to cancel my services than call an 0906 number.
    The nice lady put me straight through to the broadband helpline who fixed my problem which happened to be their modem settings...
