Thanks for advice re containers of water in the freezer. We had a powercut of 2 hours this week and my (newish) freezer went from -18 to -4 in that 2 hours!
  • Oh my gawdsake, the great flood is coming.

I will do what I did in 87 then, down pub. Wobbleade anyone?

There is a storm coming! - The good people of Unst would probably just ensure they took their washing-in. :p
Saxa Vord is a hill on the northern coast of the Unst (an island in the Shetlands) which rises to a height of 935 feet with communications masts and a dome relating to the early warning station of RAF Saxa Vord on the slopes. It was on Saxa Vord that gusts of wind briefly reached a record speed of 177 mph (285 kph) in 1962 before the measuring equipment blew away. In the winter of 1991-92 the RAF radar station was badly damaged by a storm, during which the wind may have reached 197 mph (317 kph).

re powercuts and freezers fill every space you can with plastic containers of water

Mine is so packed full of food I don't think I could even squash an ice-cube in right now.

Re: driving and this wet windy weather....

Rather odd after me mentioning it last night, but I have just come spinning off the road and into some grassland (totally ok and don't know how bottom front of car appears ok and could drive on...after I noticed the car needed switching on again) , and passed 2 other cars with police attendance and in ditches. The roads must be quite bad, so Do be careful folks as the roads are obviously wet and warm and therefore probably pretty greasy.

  • No it is not the end of the world, no we're not all doomed but if we are in for a spell of worse weather than we're used to doesn't it make just a little bit of sense to do what we can to protect our property and make sure we don't have to go out for any supplies during the height of the winds? That surely is only being sensible not paranoid???
  • Anyone who ignores the early weather warnings is irresponsible. The damage caused by the 1987 storm was terrible and people lost their lives.

I for one will be preparing, and if the storm does not hit us then no harm done, better to be prepared than caught out.

High wind and rain over night here. Damage so far - one empty garden waste recycling bag blew down the garden and wedged under the back gate. I thought I'd weighted it down with the leg of the garden bench - done properly now.

Just remember if your power goes out and you've reported it, then it comes back report that too, otherwise the electricity company will waste time investigating your area when they could be focusing on places where it's still out! There'll be lots of teams on standby ready to help if things do occur, but remember that the people out and about won't always be the ones who can fix your issue so be patient with them!:)
