Storm coming

Early warning of storm due to hit UK late Sunday. Gusts could reach 80 mph:eek:. Things I will be doing include making sure there is nothing in the garden that can blown around and get damaged. Making sure cloches and cold frames are well pegged down. Might get the wind up torch ready and a few candles out just in case...

Hubby posted a long advice thing on one of our village facebook pages about preparing for the storm.
We will be making sure everything outside is secure and I will bring the torches and lamps up the kitchen. We have enough food for a long long time so should be fine there.
Water, especially in flood risk areas, can be disrupted so bottling some now may be a good idea.

we are battened down and ready for the potential power cuts

it will be worse than met o are saying
  • Refilled all the water containers yesterday and made sure the solar lamps were on charge on the windowsill. I shall use tomorrow to make food that can be eaten cold should we lose the power supply. Have made sure we have bottled gas for the stove and have put away garden items that might 'fly' in strong winds. All we can do now is wait.......

    Hate wind :(

Least I've got millions of yankee candles to help me if we do have a storm.
Fed up of the rain constantly at the moment though - walking a mile and half each way to work is awful
  • Quite scary really. I live in Sussex and remember the 'hurricane' of 1987. We lost electricity and most of the roof tiles. I was very scared. The floorboards in the house were moving as the wind was so strong.

I'll go and fold up the rotary line and wedge my watering can under the bench. The rest is storm proof already.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

  • Wow I have to say you lot are very calm. I’m terrified atthe thought of this storm. I was born in the last storm. I have heard horrorstories from my mum & dad about them struggling to get to the hospital intime for my arrival.

I’ve never experienced anything as bad (As far as I canremember) So panic has taken over. I have my stash ready. Only thing I need isfood which I will be getting tomorrow. Hopefully I wont get caught short.

:) Hmm, and it's predicted to hit us here in southern England, where we can be a bit complacent about missing the worst of the weather.

Haven't got a garden (flat dweller) but will patrol the lottie and corral one or two things currently outside into the shed in case they fly. Haven't really got any way of protecting the glass on my HM cold frame should something land on it. It's enormously heavy itself and takes two strong people to move it with difficulty, so is no more likely to blow away than the shed.

Most of the crops are harvested but the runners are still up as some have set seed and they're drying out. Not ready yet but if they blow over, not the end of the world.

I orient things on the lottie, which is an exposed site, with consideration of the prevailing wind anyway but one of my new neighbours, (against my advice btw) put a polytunnel broadside to the wind. It had to be repaired and strengthened several times in the past few months. Hope it'll survive the storm OK............

  • This has prompted me to make sure I have enough petrol in my car and get some water. We are at risk to surface water and I cover my air brick in heavy rain and remove after. Going to pick up some bits and make sure have torches that work. Keep safe and hope it all blows over.xx
