  • My lot think I have lost my marbles with making sure I have everything sorted out, I mentioned about sorting out the candles and they all rolled their eyes! Should this storm hit and they are needed, maybe I won`t share them :D

For those of you who rely on electricity for cooking can I suggest using your BBQ .

I live in in Carlisle. When we were flooded in 2005 I found it invaluable to cook meals and hot water for drinks .

NB we cooked at the back door not in the lounge . :)

Word of warning...ONLY use a BBQ outside or,if it needs to be at back door, with the door wide open and plenty of ventilation.Obviously no good if a Gale is blowing!

BBQs emit carbon monoxide over a prolonged period.People have died from using in enclosed spaces, whether that be tents or houses (even with ventilation)

re powercuts and freezers fill every space you can with plastic containers of water

And take one large frozen one out at the start of the power cut and put it in the fridge to keep the fridge cold.

I agree that it does seem ever so slightly OTT. Nice catchy headline though, surprised the media haven't done similar yet.

It could well turn out to be a very bad storm, but it could equally just be a damp squid. Have my stuff sorted so that I don't get caught out but that's it really.

  • Quite scary really. I live in Sussex and remember the 'hurricane' of 1987. We lost electricity and most of the roof tiles. I was very scared. The floorboards in the house were moving as the wind was so strong.
I was living in Brighton when the hurricane of 87 hit.
The side of my roof was literally blown off and the loft door kept banging up and down. The shed disappeared and the neighbour next door lost his pigeon shed and the birds. I'm still a bit scared now if it gets really windy.

Dunno about that, the last thing I'd want to do is open the freezer, even for a few seconds. But then my freezer is fairly full whereas my fridge never has that much in it so...

I live in Devon and am supposed to be going to the Isle of Wight on Monday:eek:.

If it hits as predicted I am not going anywhere, not so much worried about the ferry as it can get across in gale force 9 winds, it's the drive up that worries me. If the RAC advice on Monday is essential travel only, I shan't be going anywhere until Tuesday, checked with the ferry company and where we are staying and they are all fine with it.

The worst thing on Monday will be persuading my partner that it isn't a good idea to get in the car. :(

Hmmm - I'm fairly relaxed about preps, we're well stocked up, have candles, alternative means of cooking etc. at home, BUT I'm supposed to be elsewhere on Sunday, for a workshop, 40 miles away in a village on the coastal side of the West Dorset hills. Last winter I nearly broke an axle getting back from there; half the roadway had washed away in the two hours I was down there, so I drove into what looked like a puddle (single track road, very steep) & heard an awful crunch... luckily no real harm done, apart from getting damp & cold trying to see under the car with a torch in the cold & wet, with torrents of icy water racing down the road like a mountain stream, but it gave me quite a scare. That village is quite often cut off altogether in winter.

So do I grit my teeth, remember I'm British & just get on with it & go anyway? Or do I let everyone else down & cry off? OH was until recently a member of the emergency services & is very scathing about idiots who drive unnecessarily in bad weather, as it's not just their lives they're risking, but also those of the ambulance crews & fire engines who have to turn out to rescue them. But I don't want to let the others down...

:) Re putting crosses of tape on windows, it was found not to work in Hurricane Katrina.

You can effect an emergency repair of sorts with clear sticky film such as for covering books (£ Store) which could hold certain kinds of glass which were cracked but not actually broken out. I have some by me anyway for other purposes but it could be deployed in an emergency.

Apparently our glorious leaders use floor-length net curtains with weighted hems at Downing Street - they are supposed to contain flying glass in the event of a bomb. If the windows are looking dodgy, close your curtains and try to avoid lingering in front of glass.

If it all goes horribly wrong, under the stairs or in a large cupboard are the safest places.
