We had torrential rain like a power shower at midday, with little hail stones too.
Right now the sky is the maddest colour, a bit like in war of the worlds.....

I'm in Semilong and at 6 am, the rain was being blown UP the hill, which was weird to see! No damage in the pocket sized garden and the house seems fine too.

Had to get to W'boro for work this morning but thanks to local radio managed to avoid the A45 :-)

Hope everyone else is okay too,

    Alice

    Hi Alice,

Got home safely from our break. Thankfully a safe journey. Unfortunately back home to a leaky roof and no central heating.

It turned out to be a lot of fuss about nothing.

99 mph winds on the Isle of Wight, 5 people killed in the UK, structural damage and disrupted travel across Northern Europe.

It went on to kill 7 in Germany and 1 in each of Denmark, Holland and France

The forecasters were facing huge criticism if they had over-warned or under-warned. I think they were surprisingly accurate.

Well, I thought we'd avoided the worst of it - this morning the wheely bins had blown over and there were branches down here and there on the roads, but that seemed to be it. I've just noticed on the news that someone died round the corner from us when a tree fell on his car - probably during the gusts I heard as I was waking up. Sobering thought!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I think a lot more lives would have been lost if we hadn't been so well warned - and we WERE here on MSE!
imagine if that had struck with no warning!

I so agree, Meritaten. I would rather be overwarned any day.

Even seemingly little things matter. The fact that we bothered to put away flyaway items in the garden, or weight down the bins by the front door, may have saved a neighbour's house or car window from being broken and the hassle of clearing up mess and an insurance claim. I know this is tiny in comparison with potential loss of life but it still matters. And having got our garden storm ready, it'll stay that way for the winter now.

Accidents that don't happen won't make the news, only the tragedies. :(
  • I,m in essex and we seem to have gotten away with it quite lightly compared to some. Few fences down trees fallen debris etc. been without electric since 6 this morning till 7 this evening and the internet has been down till about half hour ago. But hey oh we are lucky . Those poor families that have lost loved ones is awful, my heart goes out to them. I hope everyone here is safe and sound. Now to catch up on the threads.
  • Storm coming, storm prepared for, storm arrived did its' thing and storm gone!!! storm was coped with much better for having prior warning of it and therefore time to make gerden and home safe not just for us but for neighbours too and as a result no damage to people or property so, many thanks to Rosy for starting this thread and flagging it up in the first place, good job done well, THANKS ROSY, Love Lyn xxx.

My OH was fretting all over the weekend about the flight he and DS were due to get yesterday morning. Tried and failed to get on Eurostar (before that closed down).

And then, yesterday morning, there wasn't really a breath of wind here in the Midlands - they made it to the airport (just before the railway shut down for a bit), flight was more or less on time. A roller coaster landing in Hamburg - that apparently caused more than one panic attack (not OH or DS), and then - stranded :(

Trains in North Germany in absolute chaos - they had no chance of getting anywhere so booked into a hotel to wait it out. Oh the irony :p
I wanna be in the room where it happens
