Hmm,met office forecast showing Amber wind alerts for between 3am and 12pm but winds of 19-34mph and no gusts.
Makes no sense.
I guess they still aren't able to predict what's happening then?
those are average wind speeds. Gusts can be 2-3 times more than the average wind speed:eek:0 -
It is still 14c here and the house is warm but if anyone is in a cold area, please turn up your heating now and get the house warm because if you lose power, you will lose your heating. At least your house will hold some of the heat for a while
I am not cold but will turn mine on for an hour to get it warmer, just in case temps drop overnight and the power is off.0 -
One wee tiny niggle because I live in a high windy place - don't just lie wheelie bins down. Weigh them down as well...with more weight than you think you'll need0

Thanks everyone for all the useful tips and prompts. Thanks kitti for your tech insight.Too right, the forecast is academic atm, you're either sorted or it's come-as-you-are. Once it's been and gone they can compare notes and compete for best forecaster prize. Life's pretty much a best guess as the weather doesn't perform to schedule anyway.
We have sun and mostly blue sky with some fast-moving streaky clouds. The wind is getting stronger by the minute, though, and starting to whine around the building, like a lost soul in torment.
I loathe that sound, really sets my teeth on edge. Be interesting to see what pertains overnight and into tomorrow. I expect to be a very very busy council phone wallah.........Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Oh I Love extremes of weather...............I know weird. If I lived in the right place I guess I could easily be a 'storm chaser'!
Loving all the stories on here of hatch battening, torch finding, candle hunting, draft proofing pets and k!ndle charging ( aha at last a use for them;)).... but stocking up on food......really?? All forecasts I have seen have said its overnight and will pass quickly are we really expecting a complete shut down of days??? But then this is the land of 3 snowflakes and we are at a standstill  I have been round the garden today and found a few stray pots and put a garden table and chairs in the shed and fought back the tomatoes to close the green house door. We have also G clamped the conservatory roof as the last time we had high winds ( last winter, like most winters!) we lost most of it to a near neighbours garden and I dont really want another insurance claim.
We always lose the electric in high winds here so torch and candles are close at hand and if it is a siege we cook and heat using solid fuel so I guess I will be cooking for neighbours again as I did a few Christmases ago when the village was without power for a week:)
DD1 lives in the south and is out taking pictures of the sea at the moment and we will go for a beach walk tomorrow to look at what has been washed up.........always interesting! Or we may turn right and go looking at waterfalls cos they too will be spectacular
All things said I hope people keep safe and look out for your neighbours:)Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

We've already got gusty winds and a large branch down in Brum. Rain off and on all day but picking up now. Furry Beast walked and we are fully prepped (I think DH thinks I've gone mental - bath filled, water bottles filled.) Waiting to see if things really pick up before filling thermos' before bed.
Just occurred to me. Probably not the best day to change the bed - any bets on the Furry Beast ending up IN/ON the bed rather than just in the bedroom tonight?:DGoals - Weight loss 6/26lb at 22nd Jan 18Mmmm. 26lb at 1/7/18. Oops:o0 -
In northwest here were due mainly heavy down pours and at risk of localised flooding. The park accross the road tends to flood and Asda gets hit too. Weve taken in the sandpit from the yard and the wheelie bins are full (due to be empty) just gld its not school tomorrow as we'd be blown away at the bus stop.Jan 2015 GC £267/£260

It is quite funny, I've got all my devices charged up to 100%, just in case!
That was one thing we didn't have to worry about in '87
Also, we didn't follow all the events online .... I have a strange feeling I'm going to be up half the night checking everyone's updates, as long as I've got the internet, that is!:rotfl:Early retired - 18th December 2014

We've just propped open the storm drain outside the back door. It flooded one autumn because the water couldn't drain away, and DH had to go out barefoot in rolled-up trousers to rescue stranded cats who couldn't reach the house."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000
