Mrs L -- you always get some smartass with a wee comment... if we were to stuff our houses full of preps and then sit back with folded arms, somebody would make a remark. If we go out last minute and check everything's sorted then somebody will make a remark. If we don't do anything at all, then somebody will etcetc. Because it's much easier to sit on yur bum and make wee remarks than it is to actually get off it and do something! :)
Agree with that custardy! We've had much worse but to Sky News, Scotland doesn't exist :)

Why is trying to stay safe and be prepared so frowned upon??? I don't understand it , Lyn xxx.

That's the impression I have with my Housing Association...hello? Isn't it better to be prepared so if the weather turns bad you don't have to go out, especially when the snow and ice arrives, you avoid a posible fall, if on a limited income and you have better food stored that was purchased on offer/reduced so your money goes further that has to be a good idea?

That you have flasks, fleeces, blankets and clothes that will keep you warm if the gas/electric fails but they treat you like a weirdo yet many more think as we do but perhaps as they are in their own homes authority figures don't realise how common it is. A neighbour told me yesterday their garage is full of all kinds of things purchased when on offer.

If I say I do it, those in charge are surprised. I had to admit it to them once but avoid doing so these days if I can help it.

I wonder why being prepared for something out of your control, as much as you can prepare, always has those few who pour scorn and derision on those of us who look ahead and try to be ready for possible disruptions? I certainly haven't been to the shops for a panic buy, I always have enough in store to cover feeding us, keeping us clean, and keeping our clothes and the fabric of our house clean and in good order anyway so there was no need! Why is trying to stay safe and be prepared so frowned upon??? I don't understand it , Lyn xxx.

I think its a arrogance, if your prepare then you have admitted to a fragility in the system.

There is a massive amount of faith business as usual will always continue.

We live in a modern and technological world, where the west is no question top of the food chain. It will not happen to us, that stuff happens to third world countries.

To think otherwise is deemed backward and unnecessary.

The wind is definitely picking up here. I drove into town at 10am and a "For Sale" sign blew across the road and almost hit the car ahead of mine.
Bit scary! Glad to be home now. :) Keep safe everyone.

Oooo yes you must bring the pigs in, and anyone else with small furrys I would think.

Northeast here, temp has just dropped a bit all of a sudden, and the wind is getting up plus a bit of rain starting.

Only thing I panic bought was a chicken which is in the oven and potatoes going in soon as my panic is entirely food based as hungry.

    Hope everyone stays safe.

    Rain lashing down now.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Garden things all cleared away and put in shed, I hope shed roof survives!:p

    Mobile phones and kindle charged.

    Hoovering done.

A load of washing drying in tumble dryer.

Bottles of water put in the freezer.

Bottles of diluted fruit squash in fridge.

Food in fridge, bean dip, pasta salad and loaf of bread with pots of peanut butter and jam. Cereal bars, biscuits etc... in cupboard.

I think that's about all I can think of to do.:) One thing I did think was to move the wardrobe in front of the bedroom window in case it gets really scary tonight?

There was a tweet from @MPSinthesky (the police helicopters lot) which made me smile:
we'll be flying, it'll be be bumpy and uncomfortable but should see some epic ground-speeds! #sickbags

Apparently the only limitation is than they need sub 50 knots to start the rotors (and they can do that in the lee of the hangars so no problem for them)

Woodturners are crazy people. I have a beautiful wood bowl on my shelf made from a beech tree which snapped off in the 1987 storm, have had it over 20 years and it's one of my favourite possessions.

Noooo don't mention falling beech trees. We have a 150 year old one at the bottom of our garden  it's obviously withstood a lot so hopefully this is a mere puff to it. It is also anchored down by a lot of road and housing but is still tall enough to squish a bit of our house if it went  and this wind is in the right direction for that to happen.

I think the worst would be a major branch would come off, but it looks sound. It has a TPO so we can't do anything about it, even of we wanted to.

And OH and DS are supposed to be flying out of Birmingham airport in the morning. He tried to get a last minute Eurostar to Brussels but I think others had the same idea and nothing to be had.

Thanks for the mobile phone reminder, I will plug it in now
I wanna be in the room where it happens

A load of washing drying in tumble dryer.

Mine dried in less than 3 hours outside this morning :rotfl:

Since I've got plenty of time today and tomorrow, I'm off to do nice things to the car - so today stripping the old wax off, polish then glaze and sealant on and will top it with a couple of layers of wax tomorrow, it's going to be very, very shiny :p
