:) A small part of the main library is open for a few hours on a Sunday, Mar. Enough to enable me to get a bit of post-Apocalyptic fiction.

Wind's getting up and traders in the precinct will have to start taking their A-boards in soon as they're being blown over. One shop had put up an easel-type sign just where people walk; a wooden board just resting on the easel bit. Doh, that was really sensible on a windy day and the beggar flew a couple of meters just as I passed it (the devil looking after his own again, I guess).

Can report that there are a few people saying to each other in Poondland Shall we get some batteries? but nothing like a run on anything milky or farinacious (not sure if that's actually a word btw).

yup never been out of Edinburgh me
Been on small ships at sea in storms
been in Tropical storms in multiple countries and yes a hurricane in the early 90's
I can tell you this,if it was hitting the 'less affected areas' then it certainly wouldnt be all over the national news

I wondered when this was going to turn into a north V south thing!

Put it this way, I was more scared in Oct 87, than I was during my run in with Hurricane Floyd. So, October 87 was a significant event

Well, all the washing dried in double quick time, as it's quite breezy out there.

We've done our hatch battening, just in case. We took down our bird feeding station, but I feel quite sorry for the robin, as he's looking very confused at the removal of his lunch!

It's Mr Goldie's birthday today, so we've opened a bottle of wine and we'll now see what happens

Thinking how I can batten down the pet hutches. We can't bring them in because DS is allergic. Their hutches are quite heavy, and I have a very heavy picnic table (bench type from a pub skip) that I will use to wedge them against the hedge. I hope that's enough.

I am in Devon and it is lovely here today, weird as it's supposed to be the area that gets hit the hardest.

With regard to my Isle of Wight ferry crossing tomorrow the site is saying they have a contingency plan if the brown stuff hits the fan.

Packing regardless and hoping for the best. Might all sleep in the front room tonight if it does come in bad. Don't like to think of my daughters in their own bedrooms, silly I know, but need us all together tonight.

Partner still thinks it is a load of old baloney....

:) Well, just come off the jellybone with the aged parents and have tried to persuade them to get some bread in.

Epic fail. According to my light-hearted Dad, if they run out of bread (1.5 loaves at present, 3 adult household) they will eat cake. When I asked what happens when the cake runs out, I'm told they'll eat the cats.

Ach well, they're all adults, they'll have to be uncomfortable and hungry if they aren't making the right judgement call. Reminded Mum of where I have stashed candles in their home, so she can find them with the ONE torch she's told me they have..............:wall:

Any old carpet you can staple gun to them to make them more wind proof and can be later removed? And like you say put whatever you can up against them to take the brunt of any wind.

It's actually draughts that harm most small furrys rather than the cold.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

It rained earlier, but it's sunny now, so I'm going to get my washing out ASAP.

Reading about people's experiences of the October 87 storm, reminded me of my friends's story.

The day before the storm, she hadn't seen any TV, so she had no idea it was going to be windy.

The strong winds woke her and her husband up at around 3am. They live on quite high ground, and when they looked out the window, they could see all the lights going out across town, until everything was dark.

The only conclusion they could come to was that a nuclear bomb had gone off and what they were experiencing was the nuclear wind from the force of the blast!

Their battery operated radio was in the shed and they couldn't go and get it, as they were afraid of nuclear fall-out. So they couldn't get any information.

They spent the rest of the night, sealing up all the doors and windows, so that none of the fallout could get into the house.

It was only when the winds dropped in the morning, and they heard the milk float go by, that they realised they weren't under nuclear attack!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Oh that made me laugh!!! I bet it was terrifying at the time though!

I have just been out collecting chestnuts with a friend and obviously our main topic of conversation was this storm and how likely we are going to be hard hit. We both came to the conclusion that, whilst we don't want it, we will be disappointed if it doesn't happen after all the prep and planning!

I will be keeping my littlies in my room tonight, one in my bed and one on a camping mattress on the floor. My bedroom is north facing so will not be hit as hard as their south facing bedroom.

Posting my 'to do' list so I don't forget anything...

    Tape letterbox up
    Lay wheelie bins down
Fill all 2l bottles with water
    Tumble dry clothes
Load DW and run that so everything is clean
    Vacuum living room
Find torches (I can only find one)
    Get candles ready
Clean out fire (altho it isn't cold, it is comforting to have a fire!)
Early baths for the little ones
Chill the wine and wait it out ;)

I doubt that anything severe is going to happen whilst I am still awake, and I will likely sleep through the worst of it so a power cut won't affect me too badly unless it is still off tomorrow afternoon. There should be enough hot water in the tank for a bath in the morning but I won't wash my hair if I can't use the hairdryer

Course, if it all kicks off big time, I won't be going to work in the morning but I hope that won't happen. I work less than 10 mins drive away. My colleague gets in before me and if the power is off there, I won't be able to do anything anyway so might as well stay at home!

The only tree that has me a little worried, as it is diseased and has a lot of dead wood on it, is on the north/west side so will not land on my house. I wonder if the people opposite are worried?
