Where in Devon are you?Certainly not 'lovely' in Plymouth and the wind is picking up

In East Devon, just near Sidmouth. Still nice now... No rain, wind, nothing. Maybe it's on the way up.

  • Have to share the most enterprising thing I've seen to do with this storm - notice on local pubs chalk board seen when walking the houndicus this afternoon:-

    ARMAGEDDON COMING

    BEER AND SHELTER

    INSIDE--->

They deserve extra custom for that don't they? Lyn xxx.

:wave: I'm in the East too, but the "other side", nearer Dorset. It's a bit rainy and a bit windy, but otherwise ok, but there was some drama at Lyme on The Cobb, when people thought they saw someone washed off by waves, but after a thorough search (copters and such), they think it was a false alarm.

Drove through Sidmouth earlier as cat sitting (and it seemed very mild for being by the sea), put loads of food down for them just in case I can't get there tomorrow.

GQ, your parents are of the generation, worse things happen at sea.
I don't recall any major prepping by mine, although there was always a huge stock of sugar  (war related), and something to eat...worst came to worst, bread & butter for tea. I've lived in places that weren't safe before a hurricane hit them. :rotfl:
  • Filled up the water butts.

No drought success for next spring!! Have to say it is a bit soggy down the hill as the torrents flow from our street.

Hmm,met office forecast showing Amber wind alerts for between 3am and 12pm but winds of 19-34mph and no gusts.

    Makes no sense.

I guess they still aren't able to predict what's happening then?

  • Water butt taps turned up, ready for the deluge, should it come. Diverter that is, so those at bottom of hill enjoy the water

:) They were both born in the early years of WW2, Byatt, and Mum is an East Ender. Dad and his family had a very near miss with a crippled American bomber missing the house they were in by mere feet. It's a wonder I'm here in this particular format, frankly......:rotfl:

Mum was asking me about my butane camping stove though; detailed questions which often indicate a potential purchase in the future....there may yet be hope.

Wind's getting up here although still dry and sunny. Hope my city weathers the storm without too much damage. Can think of several tall buildings with scaffolding on atm and that'd be merry hell if it collapsed.

Have just "shopped" my deep larder to refill the food cupboard in the kitchen and amended the notebook of supplies. I keep the entries in pencil for simplicity. Have added some more sardines (40p at Liddly right now) to the preps.

Folks have decided to ground Wild Thing, one of their two cats. She's a mongrel mog who resembles a Norwegian forest cat and hates being indoors unless its baltic. She hasn't slept indoors since May but she will tonight. They have her sister as well, a mongrel oriental type who is a delicate little flower who hates to be out unless it's at least 25 degrees and dry. She's snuggled down on a bed already.

I'm not going to worry about the specifics of any changing forecast now. I've done a lot of prep, thanks to this thread and the prepare for winter thread, so tonight will be time to hunker down.

Thanks everyone for all the useful tips and prompts. Thanks kitti for your tech insight.

  • Having a snuggly night in planed with a bottle of red wine I got for my birthday. I will see how loud the wind is might have kids in my bed as youngest is a light sleeper.

We have had short showers and its a little blowy. Will tape down my wheeley bin lids! thanks for the reminder
