So, last night on the phone to sister, while rummaging through kitchen freezer deciding the mealplan for her visit next week. This morning find the pack of chicken legs on top of fridge defrosting. Oops! Guess what i'm having for dinner  :D

    yesterday
    in:- 0
out:- uncooked steak and kidney, cubed venison, chestnuts, puff pastry

Yesterday was our 'posh tea' day.
started with parsnip and apple soup - one portion went back in freezer.
Then steak and kidney with chestnuts. I hadn't enough braising steak for the kidney so had to use some venison as well. 2 x 2portions went back in the freezer.
Dessert:- fruit compote, I use Delia's recipe, it's a favourite. All ingredients in the cupboard as it's mainly made with dried fruit, and oranges/lemons. It was a good way to use up some oranges still in the bowl  5 x 2portions went in the freezer.

    Today
Out:- HM turkey soup for lunch
There should be no further movement today as we're having toad in the hole for tea

I've been quite busy with apples, Bramleys, Norfolk Russets and an un-named one. I've frozen over 60lb in slices in 1lb pks as I never have too much success in storing them long term, but I've also put some in trays in a cool place which will be used first  I should have enough to last around to the next crop. I've also got loads of medlars which will have to be dealt with next. Almost forgot - II also made 24lb of mincemeat which had to be frozen as there is too high a percentage of apple in the recipe to keep well in jars.
I'm now concentrating on things to use over the Christmas period. I like to get well organised as we have no staff over this time, so there is just DH and myself to feed/look after all the animals.

I think I'll make a list of things to make/cook/freeze and work through that.

Wow, that is a lot of apples!
In: hm spiced plum chutney (thanks to a very generous L1dl £1.50 box!), stocked up on some spices, hm roast butternut soup and cubed butternut. Late last night also a stuffed turkey crown for christmas day. Never done turkey before, so fingers crossed.
Out: ingredients for hm sundried tomato bread rolls, ingredients for a quick chilli con carne, marrow ring, tin rice pudding. Also gifted my sister some plum chutney and a pumpkin from the shed storage.
Need to do a tidy in fridge (like grate and freeze the cheese) before going away on sunday.

In: grated cheddar, grated parmesan, half punnet of grapes, bit of creme fraiche, few blanched carrots, 2 wedges pointed cabbage. Tomorrow morning, whatever bread is left.

Away for almost 2 weeks, so happy seasonal planning/eating everyone!

I've not posted here for a while. I used to do an inventory of all my foods and work through them using up anything passed its best before dates.

Can I ask if anyone has ever done a complete sweep of such items?

I have flour and other items that are coming up to a year old - not many, but I just think I'd be happier with getting rid of them and starting with a new slate for 2022.

I've coffee that is years old. I don't drink it myself, but no-one has complained about it. Or the tea, but that's only just passed its best before date.

I have removed the items I think I can use up this month and put them on my kitchen counter as I do hate waste.

However, I am trying to lose weight too, and I find I'm eating things just to clear them. I'm not wanting to make cakes etc as there is only me here.

I've eaten an apple crumble over two days that was in the freezer and I've two bigger ones to go. I made those ages ago to use up some apples! But they won't get thrown away. I might take one to my daughter's house tonight for our tea.

    I'd welcome some advice.

Hi @Frogletina, think doing a clean sweep is a great idea. Make sure to do a search first of how long things can still be ok for (i checked before going away and eggs can be ok for 3 - 5weeks after sell by date!)

If you are attempting to loose weight (like i will be soon) then don't just replace old for new, unless you really need to. I went from having all kinds of flours to just 2.
If you don't drink coffee, then just offer guests what you have, or buy small tin "posh" coffee, less waste and they will appreciate the treat i think.
Use your daughter and neighbours to get rid of things, can always turn it into dishes and treats and gift over Christmas.

I am back from an absolutely wonderful time in Portugal, can't wait to have a go at making some seafood dishes tried out there.

    Out: last night butternut soup.
