Welcome tallyhoh Like you I have a veg plot but at home, 2 polytunnels, fruit cage and an orchard so I also have a dehydrator. At the moment I've got pear slices in it as I'm making crisps. I saw somewhere about putting sugar and ginger on them but we prefer them plain. I don't find growing your own is much cheaper than buying the food and it takes up quite a lot of time but at least I know what has not been put on the vegetables whilst growing.
Freezer:- In chicken breasts. I'm a bit annoyed with myself as we don't usually eat chicken because I grow my own free range organic turkeys and I freeze enough to last the year. Somehow I miscalculated how many I needed and I've now run out. My DH refused to eat the chicken just plain roasted after he tried the first one saying they had no structure or taste. I'll now have to make pies etc
Out:- egg whites to make meringues, some frozen fruit/berries. Sausages - they were horrible, don't get me started on about supermarket sausages. We unfortunately finished off the sausages that came with the pork (the farrier breeds and raises rare breed pigs and we do a swap every year - pork for turkeys).
Just fed this years turkeys and I must go and dig up some potatoes before lighting the fire (coldest night of the year and I let the woodburner go out - call me stupid)0 -

Out: HM swedish meatballs, mash, peas

Went out shopping for somebody else but did not purchase any food for myself. Seemed like more people are sniffing or coughing at the moment. Always try to shop less (outdoor) this time of year due to this, so current food "stores" will be handy.0

Re using things up from the freezer:
I have a frozen goose crown - purchased last year as a backup in case the fresh turkey for Christmas Day failed in some way to arrive, or to store OK, etc. ,-)
Or as a backup in case we had need for another feast in the New Year. Never used it though.
So: as it needs to be used up, am thinking of using it for this year, actually on Christmas Day this time.
But am concerned that it might not have stood the test of time!
I have read on a .gov website by the food safety govt organization that frozen food is in fact safe to eat after its recommended use-by date, but that what does happen is that the texture can change once it is left in the freezer.
That Food Standards website doesn't say exactly how the texture changes. So I am not sure what to expect.
Is this texture change the case for frozen goose?! And does it change so much that it affects the quality of the meat? I'd bin it for the cost I paid, but 'Waste not, want not', as they say!
Mainly: I'd HATE to rely upon this goose crown & then find it turns out rubbish for Christmas Day!
P.S. This particular item is a Goose Crown (1kg) by Braemoor (Lidl). Here's the Lidl webpage - as the item is still available (although, interestingly, this year's is 50g lighter in weight than our 1kg item!) this year: Braemoor Goose CrownAPennySaved
Money, money, money . . . !
