Eating out of the freezer and cupboards challenge - part two

Hi I have a question regarding allotment veg. My dad has grown a load of veg etc that he passes on when he has too much. However I’m a bit worried as he waters it all from an open water butt that’s pretty nasty inside! Green, yacky, with mini water creatures! Am I being over causious?? He doesn’t see a problem with it but I have three young kids so rather not risk it!
I would obviously wash it all but it’s more that it’s grown from it if you know what I mean?
Thanks in advance :cool:0 -

Still, settled water is better for plants than tap water. Especially if the water in the butt is rainwater. Even if he fills it from the tap, the fact it stands will make anything nasty sink. Don't worry about algae or gribblies, they are a good sign. Peeling or washing, and cooking solve any problems, including ants in things and other insects and birds on nearly ripe fruit or veg.
The freshness will enhance the vitamins and minerals tooSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £9586.01 out of £6000 after August (158.45%)

I always try to live out of cupboards and freezers in the new year. I can usually last until about March. I grow most of own potatoes and buy long life milk from Aldi so can usually get by without topping up on anything. I keep my bread in the freezer so only take out what I'm going to use and I grate cheese and keep that in the freezer too. I keep my eggs in the fridge so they last longer. It takes a little bit of imagination thinking up some meals but I live on my own and am not very fussy.
I enjoy seeing space appear in my cupboards, freezer and fridge. A good time for clearing and cleaning out.0 -
My usage of food items (purchased before September 2018) is only slowly increasing. Currently, it is at 29 out of the set 100 for my mini-challenge this month. However, food ingredients are being used up in recipes (not finished yet). Recently, I have acquired some reduced price food groceries and some special offer store cupboard ingredients.0

I'm doing this on a daily basis now. Anything I can find. It makes for some wacky meals to be fair. Weetabix for lunch
for example.
Nothing wrong with that. The ultimate goal of this for me, is to have my cupboards completely empty by Christmas. Start again 2019.0 -
Catch up, OUT beef for Sunday lunch, was going to have rest Monday, but my neighbour gave me a huge chunk of left over lamb shoulder as she won`t eat fat, I love it, so had the lamb with my roasted veggies from Sunday with the last of the beans I had picked, so IN went the left over beef and gravy for another day.
Out for a friends birthday lunch today.Do I need it or just want it.0 -
AWOL for a few days as had the kids home.
Mainly used fresh stuff but a few things in & out.
In: salmon side, refried beans, corned beef, lorne, tattie scones
Out: tinned tomatoes, passatta, tea bags, tortilla chips, pinto beans
Use up: roasted chicken, corn cobette, bread roll0 -
No major OUTs, although I've taken a few items from the cupboard that I bought for the cashback but never ate/never will to the food bank.
I go on holiday next week, and my plan is to try and eat everything in my fridge before then so I have a fresh start on my return!0
