Ruined engagement surprise, what can we do ??

Agreed-she knew
Mind you after ten years - and him going away to work and not sharing any of the extra money made when he came back....she was probably expecting a ring or another woman
I suspect Michelle is a bit smarter than DanielI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Having ploughed thru this, I have a couple of questions:
1. this was supposed to be a huge surprise. But Daniel had the ring sized. How on earth would he know the the size of his gf's engagement-ring-finger ? Now maybe at some time, he's introduced the subject, they've messed about, she's tried a different ring on that finger to see if it fitted - in which case, she's filed that conversation away in her head, and knew very well that the proposal was coming
2. What on earth would Daniel have done if Michelle had said no? Or if she had gone "oh, I'm afraid I don't like the ring" ?
Actually, I think the answer to 2. is - He'd have gone and had a good cry to Mum.
ETA - of course, we don't know from the original post whether Michelle has actually said yes, do we ?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
Just how much was the engagement ring?
It would be interesting to see how much compensation you clearly feel is adequate in your case....
Having been involved in jewellery for many years and it being "in the family"...I do empathise with your situation, but its hardly the end of the world....many proposals are thawted or dont go as planned, and sometimes its far better to have something thats spontaneous
Yes you all wanted the grand surprise and its not going to happen now but realistically its not going to stop the wedding happening is it....
perhaps as a family you should consider buying another ring as clearly the trauma of having to wear such a tainted object for the rest of her life is bound to cause upset to all.
I dont wish to cause offence but until the point that you said you wanted the ring for free I was feeling quite sad that the surprise had been spoilt, but then what clearly also seems to have come across is that actually you then named names presumably on an open forum and possibly the jewellery establishment too, which in my mind was quite a heartless and vindictive thing to do!
Therefore my suggestion to you would be if you cant get the ring for free how about contacting a show such as dont tell the bride and see if you can get a tv company to pay for the wedding too!!!!!
Edited to add...Theres not usually sarcastic tones to my posts...however every once in a while I feel they are warranted!frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Appearing on Don't Tell the Bride would mean Danny boy and one of his mates having to arrange the wedding themselves.
Someone contact the researchers - that could be TV Gold!0 -

DH and I went in together, holding hands, had an informal, legal ceremony, (no guests other than our two witnesses) and then left, holding hands,). ( actually that's how I remember it, but now I'm wondering, maybe I followed him in...)
I have no problem with the traditions, even quite like them. Contextually I might have difficulty with some of them in the modern world, and I am far from feminist,
Feminist isn't a dirty word you know!0 -
What do you guys think ??
I think it's bizarre that a thread as daft as this that is quite possibly just someone trolling has reached so many pages.1. this was supposed to be a huge surprise. But Daniel had the ring sized. My partner proposed to me but I still decided to get her an engagement ring as a surprise. It was quite easy. I pinched one of her other rings and took that to the jewelers so they knew her size, then I returned the ring to it's usual spot all during the space she was at work so she wouldn't know. The jewelers told me that's what most men do.0 -

I just proposed with a fake zirconian ring, then took my missus to Hatton garden with a phat wad of cash.
To my wife, it was important it was a surprise to other people, not just herself. The only person who knew in advance were her father and her brother (since I'd told him in an inebriated state on his stag do)
Maybe the OP needs to let her son off the reins a bit more0
