Facing dismissal because of a mistake

  • Say I did have money in my purse. And when he came back I handed him £10 for mine, and then he processed the petty cash for the company post, have I done anything wrong? I just don't see it like that. It's a technicality that my cash was sat in my purse rather than in his pocket while he went to the post office. Had I not left my purse at home none of this would even be an issue.

    It's really not a technicality.

The point is you used your employers money to post personal mail. You forgot you didn't have your purse that day and then you forgot to pay it back every day since?

IMHO I was busy doesn't and will not cut it.

    Apologies if that sounds harsh.
  • That's just it. The till did balance because the receipt for mine was in it. He knew why it was there, I told him I'd have to pay it back, I had no choice as I didn't have my purse with me! He told me not to bother paying it back, I insisted I would pay it!

    Did you do so?

    I didn't forget I didn't have my purse I honestly thought I had it.

Yes I forgot to pay it back. 14 hours a day for 2 weeks in excruciating pain as I've had my foot pinned and plated back together can do that to you.

I know I was wrong. I'm not denying it.

My point is given the circumstances, my record and all I've done for them, I feel a final warning and/or demotion a more appropriate sanction than dismissal.

The morning it was investigated I was mortified and paid it right away.

    Too little too late.

14 hours a day for two weeks means you have not been getting the legal minimum rest break between shifts.

This would no doubt contribute to your stress.

Why are your hours so long? Assume you have travelling on top?

    Yes an hour each way.
Our task has tripled. Big deliveries heading into Xmas, and ontop of that remerchandising the entire shop one dept each week, out of trading hours. It takes 3 nights followed by couple of days ticketing and tidying to do one dept. plus 5000 new lines. As well as the normal running of the shop. With no additional payroll spend for the extra task so i have to cut back in the day to provide the night, and ontop of that 25 hours a week are cut from my budget,
so as I have got to have night teams, I'm coming in at 7, supporting getting the deliveries out and putting on promotions and all usual stuff, night team don't arrive until 7 pm so I'm not allowed to leave the store as I'm only manager in all day until they arrive.

Because they have a lot to do I stay until 8pm to close the shop and cash up/tidy up, bring all the outside stock in, handover then go home. All day there is only 2 or 3 of us in when there needs to be 5 and I'm only getting a ten min break because the phone rings or the back door bell rings or the till bell goes or the tannoy rings for me.
Despite all the above, I thought I was managing it all.

7 in the morning until 8 at night is 13 hours not 14 and is allowable within the working time regs.

If you are going to use things like this as mitigating circumstances then get the facts straight.

I'd also like to add that I don't get paid overtime, or lieu as its my job to manage my time and if I complain they will say I've just got poor time management if I cant get the job done in my normal working hours. Well I could, but the customer service would nose dive, the task would be sloppy and standards poor, other stores on the area manage as they have a bigger payroll budget. Also one store manager gets £14k a year more than me. He is happy to do long days, but for that kind of money so would I!

8 is when the store closes, then I take the tills off, bring the outdoor stock in, handover and then it's gone 9 when I leave. On the week this happened the night before I left at 1am. The night before that was 11pm. Both from 7 in the morning. The other days have been 7 am until around 9pm.

I honestly can't see them wanting to get rid of you. You are giving too much to this company and the next employee might not be so much of a soft touch.

Sorry if that sounds harsh but you are only making yourself suffer for working such stupid hours.
