I don't know what to say. It wasn't intentional as I explained, I thought I had money upstairs, if that money was in his pocket instead of my purse, regardless of which physical money paid for the postage, as long as it was all sorted before it was paid into the till I didn't think it mattered.

    It was unintentional.

Sorry if that sounds lame but I don't know what else to say.

This is the point though - you took company money deliberately. It was not in any way unintentional.

So the question is why did you do that since company policy forbids it?

Nothing to do with the repayment or your intentions to repay. It is about the initial decision to go against company policy.

You seem to be suggesting that as long as you were not caught out it didn't matter - that's not a great defence I'm afraid.

Then there is no defence? I don't know why I did it? I don't have an answer! The answer is because I thought we could balance the money before it was claimed as petty cash expense.

If its as black and white as you ask, there is nothing for me to say other than I'm wrong! I don't know why I did it? Because I'm an idiot?

I dint think there was anything to catch me out on.

I just thought that the money would be balanced before the receipts went into the till. As in the receipt for mine wouldn't even go in the till because I'd pay it myself. Before it was processed as an expense.

Say I did have money in my purse. And when he came back I handed him £10 for mine, and then he processed the petty cash for the company post, have I done anything wrong? I just don't see it like that. It's a technicality that my cash was sat in my purse rather than in his pocket while he went to the post office. Had I not left my purse at home none of this would even be an issue.

You did it because you were stressed, tired, under pressure and confused about your job. It is not something you have ever done before nor can you actually believe that you did it. It is totally out of character.
  • Personally i wouldnt work in such an environment where there is zero level of intelligence and no understanding. You told the manager you were taking it just forgot to pay it back. My workplace wouldnt think twice of something like this never mind dismissal

OP in light of the new information you've supplied I don't think you should be angry with the AM. If the petty cash was down (In the till) it could have been a case of the company blaming him for taking the money.

I don't think he had any choice but to report you when the monies didn't balance. :(
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

Sorry for sounding stressy. That makes sense now. Thank you. I'm just all over the place.

I thought I was doing so well to be back at work, managing the extra workload, sort of working through my pain, feeling finally like I belong!

I was putting the hours in because I want the store to succeed and to get the job done. Why would I give so much to risk my job for £10!!!!

Yes you have done wrong. You used company money when you should not have.

Had you had your purse you still would have gone against company policy as you would have used the companies money then refunded it.

That is not a technicality no matter how you dress it up.

That's just it. The till did balance because the receipt for mine was in it. He knew why it was there, I told him I'd have to pay it back, I had no choice as I didn't have my purse with me! He told me not to bother paying it back, I insisted I would pay it!
