Previous Hotpoint washing machine lasted more than 10 years and never had a single problem. Now got a cheap Beko washing machine that has lasted 2.5 years and been fault-free during that time.

Very simple preventative maintenance: a tablet of Calgon every wash, filter checked and cleaned once a month, detergent tray cleaned and washed every couple of months, an empty boil wash once a month and door and rubber seals checked and cleaned every couple of months.

Interesting. I used to work for a large electrical retailer and their service engineers told me never to use Calgon as soda crystals did the same job for less than half the price. WHICH seem to agree....

I have a Bosch (as recommended by the above engineers) and it's in its sixth year of trouble free service. When it does eventually die I will buy the cheapest Miele I can find. Also, my MIL has a Hotpoint she uses once a week for the past two years. (I would class this as very light use.) This machine has been leaking for the past two months, the engineers have been out to it SIX times and have still been unable to stop the leak ( but that's another story).

How many years should you expect to bethe life of your Washing Machine. Our was a Zanussi ZWG 1120M which has lasted under 3 years before breaking down. Our usage was between 3 and 4 times a week. By our calculation thst has meant is has been used approximately 500 times/cycles before breaking down. We would have expected with that usage for it to have lasted at least 5 years. How long has your washing machine lasted and what is your usage. Lets see the most reliable and unreliable brands!!. The more posts the better so we get an overall picture, whether it be good or bad.

Our washing machines last about 4 years and are used 3 to 4 times a week. We never bother getting them repaired because in my eyes when you pay about £350 for a machine it is not viable.
  • We had a Zanussi and it was rubbish. it packed up in just over 2 years. We have now purchased a Samsung washing machine for just under £400 which carries a 5 year manufacturers warranty. The extended warranty swayed us over our two other possible choices, within that price range, which were a Bosch and LG. if you have the money I am sure Miele is the best brand.

My Bosch machine is 17 years and averages 4 or 5 washes a week. I make that about 4000 washes. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it.

We had an Indesit washer/dryer. The tumble dryer part gave up the ghost after three years (overheated, thermo problem). The washer part gave up a couple of weeks ago (motor burnt out) - so it lasted four years in total of medium use (3-4 loads per week).

I had a hoover washer dryer that broke down 5 times in it's first year  it was insured with comet and they eventually wrote it off.

I've got a bosch one I've had 2 years now, it had to have a new drum after a couple of months but been fine since. I got a deal with it including cashback and 4 year free warranty :money:

It's used more than once a day usually.

  • My Hotpoint was bought in June 1998 and 15 years later is still going without 1 repair!!!!

  • a lot of these tales of 10 year old washing machines are irrelevant to modern machines, even of the same brand. I sold white goods for 12 years and dealt with most manufacturers. for build quality bosch are now not worth touching, mostly built in spain and very heavy on the plastic inside where it used to be metal components (don't delude yourself that you are buying german). I would go with meile, or lg, nobody else for washing machines

As we have mentioned on another post regarding warranties, the life span and reliability of washine machines is worse than it was about 7 years ago. We brought a basic hotpoint Washing Machine from John Lewis 3 years ago and in addition to their 2 year guarantee we purchased a further 3 year extended warranty for £129. The total cost for 7Kg wasahing machine and a 5 year warranty was £429. We had to call out John Lewis after just under 3 years to get it repaired at no cost to us. We would always ensure one way or another we had a 5 year warranty as this is the minimum period we would expect it to last without any repair costs. Incidentally they has been a few mentions of Zanussi washine machine machine and there unreliability. We know of friends whose Zanussi packed up with a faulty control panel in just over 2 years. It only carried a 1 year manufacturers warranty and it was brought from Currys. It would appear that Zanussi's record is the worst of a poor/mixed bunch.
