How many years should be the life of a Washing Machine

I was told that WMs within a range by the same manufacturer have much the same basic stuff and it just tends to be the ones higher up the range have more bells and whistles. Therefore, for reliability you're better off going for a basic model of a more expensive brand than the other way around.
It made sense and I've borne that it mind when buying.
I'd be interested to hear if any domestic appliance specialists either endorse or contradict this.0 -
Just to balance a bit, my Bosch washing machine failed after 2 years and 1 month. It needed a new motor and after much negotiation I paid the £90 labour and they supplied the motor. Similarly, my Bosch dishwasher lasted nearly 4 years before an internal water leak burnt out the motor. Bosch didn't want to know.0

Have had my Hotpoint for maybe 10 years. Seems to work fine. I set it to only spin at 700 so it doesn't shake itself to death.0

Firstly I agree it is a good idea to purchase a Washing Machine that carries a 2 Year Manufacturers gurantee. I would certainly hope that for normal use any brand would last at least 5 year. We had a Hoover machine that broke down after almost exactly this time. That was 4 years ago. We now have a Bosch and it is still going strong. Our Neighbour had problems with a Zanussi washing machine (seeing above this seems to be a common theme for this manufacturer) . They have replaced it with A LG washing Machine on the recommendations of the local retailer. I aways associate LG brand with TV's.0

My Bush has lasted me 4 years so far.0

Our Miele with its 10 year parts & labour guarantee seemed like a no brainer.
It does about 5 or 6 washes a week
It's 12 now. Both Miele and ourselves appear to be winners.
I will say no more!0 -
We had a Hotpoint washing machine that survived for just under 4 years. I think you should expect 5 years minimum for a wahing machine. (I believe Hotpoint and Zanussi and possibly Hoover all have the same manufacturer) .We now have a Bosch Classic washing machine and that is still going strong after 5 years. It a shame that some companies do not follow Richer Sounds example for TV's and allow you to purchase an extended 5 year guarantee for 10% of the cost of the item. The best you can get from our knowledge is a 2 year maufactuers warranty then any further extended guarantee is a very high cost, unless anyone knows differently.0

Our Machine is also a Zanussi (Looking at this forum this brand has a terible track record) and it is only just over 2 years old (1 year standard manufacturers warranty) It now keeps blowing the fuse during the wash cycle, Engineer call out chargesare too high especially as we do not know what part is faulty. It looks likewe will have to purchase a new machine. We previously had a Bosch which lasted 6 years and we only purchased a Zanussi because it was a lot cheaper and we had financial constraints. It proved to be short sighted. If we cannot get our washing machine easily repaired without a huge cost then we will cut our losses and buy another Bosch which obviously are more reliable.0
