How many years should be the life of a Washing Machine

How many years should you expect to bethe life of your Washing Machine. Our was a Zanussi ZWG 1120M which has lasted under 3 years before breaking down. Our usage was between 3 and 4 times a week. By our calculation thst has meant is has been used approximately 500 times/cycles before breaking down. We would have expected with that usage for it to have lasted at least 5 years. How long has your washing machine lasted and what is your usage. Lets see the most reliable and unreliable brands!!. The more posts the better so we get an overall picture, whether it be good or bad.

I'd say 5 years would be about right for the purpose of the sale of goods act.

My Indesit lasted two years. Got repaired, broken thermostat and something else.

'Breaking down' doesn't mean it's reached the end of it's life. What's wrong with it?
For £40 plus parts it could be easily fixable. Even with a Zanussi.

I've got a Bosch washing machine which is at least 11 years old (between 11 and 14 years old - can't remember exactly when we got it!). It wore out the motor brushes a couple of years ago which I replaced myself for £15 worth of parts. I suspect the bearings and motor won't last forever but if it dies soon it won't owe me anything.

Bosch dryer is heading for 9 years old and Bosch dishwasher is now just under 7 years old. Neither has yet needed any repairs.

Trouble is there is a price differential between a Zanussi and a Bosch so you'd expect the more expensive one to last longer.

We have a Bosch wft2800 that is also eleven years old.

Cost quite a bit more than some machines from what I can remember.

Used almost daily and not one problem so far. (Having said that now I hope I have not bewitched it)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

<Furiously searching for a piece of proper timber> Our Indesit washer dryer must be 10 years old and not a single solitary problem. Used daily but sometimes its every other day.

    Cheers

Another Bosch which is 11 years old with absolutely nothing gone wrong with it - (that announcement is tempting fate) - used now about 3 times a week but in earlier years was used a good bit more. I do think you get what you pay for.
  • We had a Zunussi Washing Machine and it did last over 3 years but only by 2 months. We would never buy that brand again. One tip a smaller shop advised us was to go for a brand that offers at least a 2 year manufacturer guarantee. If they are only willing to offer a 1 year guarantee then the manufacturer does not have confidence in their product. They suggested a Bosch,LG or AEG which all carried at least this length of guarantee. We purchased a LG (which was on special offer) and so far are entirely happy.

We had a Philips Washing machine that lasted about 26 years of light use, and survived two house moves.

There are just the two of us so maybe 3 or 4 washes a week.

That is 4,000 to 5,000 washes.

    Circa 1983 to 2009

White goods were designed and built rather better in the 1980s.

We had a Hotpoint washing machine whose life span was just over 3 years. There are 2 of us in the house so our usage was probably below average. We would have expected it to last at least 5 years. We replaced it with a Bosch as their reliability record is excellent. Bosch machine has, as someone else mentioned a 2 year manufacturers warranty. So far we are delighted with it. We also hear AEG are excellent both are German engineering!!!

We had an Indesit washer/dryer. The tumble dryer part gave up the ghost after three years (overheated, thermo problem). The washer part gave up a couple of weeks ago (motor burnt out) - so it lasted four years in total of medium use (3-4 loads per week).
