How much do you spend on Wine?

Hi Everyone,

How much do you spend on a bottle of Wine? In particular I was curious to know the answer from those that love red wine please?!

What is a reasonable price to spend on red wine at a nice restaurant?
What is the most you have ever spent on a bottle when celebrating a special occasion??

Also feel free to let me know if you have found any decent bottles of red wine in the supermarket that you feel beats more expensive bottles :)

Thank you in advance for your replies :)

Ive tried cheap and expensive...and somehow my palatte cant really tell the difference

So based on that I dont normally spend over £5 for a supermarket bottle and probably only go for the house wines in resturants...although the cost of those can vary enormously...sometimes it £9, more often £15 and on the odd occaision its been £20+

I do like a champagne on special occaisions at home and have found some cracking ones in lidl and aldi around £15....I also like the wines from chapel down in kent and have seen the sparkling on offer at A... for £12 a bottle which is a big saving from RRP
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

I think the most I've spent in a restaurant was £42 on a bottle of Malbec.

I rarely, if ever, spend over £9 on a bottle from a supermarket though, unless it's for a gift.

    £6-£8 usually.

    £15-£20ish

£120 - Krug vintage champagne. Probably costs a lot more now.

Taragona in Lidl. £4.99 a bottle and outstanding value for money. It's equivalent to spending seven or eight quid in Sainsbury's. Sadly, my partner doesn't like red wine that much :(

On a Rioja, around £8-£10. On a Fitou around £6-£8 and on one of my favourites - a Chateauneuf-du-pape, around £16-£20.

Depends on the restaurant, I guess I average around £45 a bottle in a nice restaurant but in a really nice restaurant maybe double that.
Generally spend less on white wine as you can't really go wrong with a pinot grigio.

    As a gift I spent £80 on a delicious Barolo.......it was worth it :D

Depends on what type of red you like - French, Spanish, Italian, New World....personally I like my French and Spanish reds so usually got for a Fitou or a Rioja.
And for something different in the summer, a lovely white Rioja is perfect!

Thank you in advance for your replies :)

Can you tell I LOVE my wine? ;)

    Usually £8-20

Up to £50 depending on restaurant and occasion

£250 on champagne, with work I once spent 4k on wine at dinner that was fun getting the expenses signed off. (Although wasted on my tastebuds)

Oz Clarke was on Watchdog last night discussing a similar subject. His theory was that as the duty and VAT and profit margin was the same whichever wine you bought in a supermarket then the quality of wine was vastly superior as the wine prices went up. I'm not sure he's right about the profit but the taxes are definitely the same. Oz said that, on average, £5 bottles of wine only have 20p worth of wine in them, £4.80 is tax and profit.

The other thing he touched on was the 'half price' offers where he tracked the prices through the year and many were on offer most of the time so the full price was a bit artificial.

Try to get an offer - a £10 one to £5. Occasionally, I'll spend a tenner or so, but rarely.

Spent approx £50 (actually think we had 2 bottles - an indulgent day!!!). Usually spend between £15-24-ish.

Someone mentioned a white rioja above - agree, usually very nice!

You'll often get deals in decent off licences too. One near me's great, and they often do 2 for a tenner - always seem far nicer than the ones on offer in supermarkets. Often 'bin ends' of decent wines.

PS If it's an occasion in an restaurant, it's REALLY nice to start with a glass of fizz. Doesn't have to be Champagne, they often do Cava or Prosecco. Even better served as a bellini, kir royale, or get another cocktail to start with! Really nice start to a special meal.

Rarely buy it ... If I do, it's a fiver from the supermarket, or a tenner in a restaurant.

Went to a 'posh' do several years ago, and had some champers; it tastes like sh*t. It cost £135.

A bottle of black tower I bought for seven quid tastes HEAPS better.
