About £6 in supermarkets, £5 for a glass in a restaurant and £15 for a bottle in a restaurant. I only really drink red anyway.

I know that frankie and bennys charge £20 for a bottle of echo falls rose zinfandel when its usually £4.99 in supermarkets!!!!

fair enough. Some people feel they need a £60 drink to enjoy a night whilst others will be fine with a £15 drink.

I'd be interested to know just what justifies the cost of a £400 bottle of champagne compared to a £30 bottle of supermarket fizz from the same region.

Frankly, If my wife decided to buy me a £400 quid bottle of plonk for my birthday, i'd tell her I'd much prefer a new camera. I'm quite happy with a bog standard Californian Zinfandel most the time. If I wanted a nice white wine I'd be looking at a Chablis Premier Cru, and I think that's about the most I'd pay for a wine.

    Unsophisticated palate I guess.

Ah but what if you could have the expensive wine AND the camera? ;) Obviously there will be exceptions but I doubt many of the people that spend what you would consider large amounts of money on wine do it to the detriment of other areas of their lives. And as someone else said, you need to consider it in proportion to their salaries too.

    .

Maybe you didn't mean it to but that comes across as so judgemental! I doubt many people 'feel they NEED a £60 drink to enjoy a night'. I have fabulous nights out with friends drinking the cheapest house wine. I have equally fabulous nights out with my husband/different friends drinking expensive wine. I don't sit there with my friends turning up my nose and saying 'well I am not enjoying myself because that wine didn't cost £60'. It is just nonsense.

It's like saying 'some people feel they need to go to a nice restaurant to enjoy a night whilst others will be fine with a Nandos'... both can be good in their own ways and enjoying one does not exclude the possibility enjoying the other, too!
  • So if you can enjoy yourself on a £15 bottle of wine - why are you spending more?

Look, the same can be said for cigars, wines, whiskeys, cognacs and a variety of 'fine' products. There is a marginal difference between midrange and top range. There are products that cost a massive amount, purely to satisfy the people that want to spend that much

Because the more expensive one is nicer.

It's like saying if you could enjoy yourself sitting on the sofa with a friend and a glass of water why ever go anywhere or do anything?

I reckon that Spain is best value red country, and Chile for white. I would rather drink good Cava than Champagne, or Cremant de Bourgogne.

A French friend introduced us to Cremant, it's barely heard of over here but I am a convert now, Vouvray is just as good and I buy both in France in bulk as well.

Waitrose do two good reasonably priced £5 reds, "Good Ordinary Claret" and "Spanish Red". For whites I stay loyal to my Kiwi husband and drink Kiwi Sauvignon, Ned is my favourite.

Some of the nicest wines Ive had was when I was in Barcelona on holiday and spending what we had left in a nice cafe/restaurant on the last day, some really lovely cavas that you wouldnt get over here for about 12 euros a bottle.

Personally, Im not entirely sure that a ten quid wine would automatically always be better than a five quid wine. You'll get wines that taste good and wines that dont taste so good and a lot of it is subjective.

For example, some people love Californian wine, I cant bear it, same with Hungarian and Bulgarian wine, must be the type of grapes they use, I just cant drink it. Someone could produce the finest bottle of californian wine ever, it would still taste rank to me.

Ive tried a few types of chateauneuf du pape, Ive also bought it in europe where it was cheaper and they also had a white one as well which you dont see much over here. I spoke about asdas own brand costing about £8 or so, there wasnt much difference between that and other more expensive bottles (I dont drink expensive wine but an ex wouldnt drink anything £5 or under).

Also, some shops put so much mark up on their wines anyway, you'll find some stores sell the same wine for £2 or £3 than others so what one shop would call a £10 wine, another shop might sell it for £6.99

    I'd agree with that.

My boyfriend loves red wine a little too much & on average spends around £70-90 on a bottle when eating out. He thinks this is normal so I was interested to know what others thought!

I will look into some of your recommendations :)

It's normal if he earns over £100k, otherwise it's far too extravagant.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
