I used to spend about £150 a month, I was well aware that I was drinking too much but struggled to cut down. But I did eventually found a way of cutting down. I switched to drinking Magners cider, and now I drink about 12 cans a week and one bottle of wine, still over the recommended guidelines at about 35 units I know, but a big improvement from where I was and of course I do plan to cut down further, this is just the first stage.

I just started a ftse tracker that I pay £80 in per month which is about the saving from wine. I'm hoping that this encourages me to carry on and of course if I do over the years I will see how much it saved me. But the real value is in my health rather than financially.

Our favourite red wine is Beaune, buying a case of 6 from Tesco Wine it works out at £15 per bottle. a Beaune premier cru will cost around double that.
That's our Xmas dinner wine with some rare roast beef.

We also like Chateauneuf du Pape, that's around the same price.

Plus - as someone has already mentioned - Barolo if you're having a rich red meat dish, also a similar price depending on offers/vintage.

I have a recipe for Beef Barolo that takes a full bottle of wine.
I use a cheaper one for cooking and drink the Barolo. :rotfl:

    That's our 'posh' plonk.
We also buy cheaper wine to drink at home with not-so-fancy dishes.
We really like Kumala Pinotage Cinsault but they stopped doing bottles ages ago, we buy a 3 litre box for about £20 so works out at £5 per bottle so not the cheapest you can get.

We also like Chianti and usually stock up if we see it on offer.

I spend about £7 on a bottle. My favourite is 'Summer Red', i think it's by Gallo, although not 100% sure.
Also i like rioja but only buy the 1 that i like when its on special offer as it's normally £10 a bottle.

I rarely drink wine these days. But Im also one of these people who would rarely pay over £5 for a bottle, simply because I dont have a lot of excess funds. I use to buy a bottle of white french wine in aldi for 2.99, red and white, baron st jean I think its called, it was lovely. Theyve revamped it a bit and the white tastes a bit different now, not as nice as it used to be but thats just my opinion. Aldi do some really nice wines, have also bought their sparkling white wines. Im not the biggest fan of red wine but I do like chateauneuf du pap but asda used to do it for about £8 a bottle, think its gone up a bit now but still well worth the money.

Ive actually stopped drinking wine because Ive been losing weight lately and have switched to spirits, Ive also reduced my alcohol intake. Its very easy to rack up a lot of alcohol units if you drink wine, a lot of people think 1 glass = 1 unit but many pubs sell 250ml glasses and as wines are getting stronger a lot of bottles of wine will have 10 units and up in a bottle.

I dont really miss it which is odd as it was always my drink of choice. I did like australian and NZ wines, but they tend to be quite strong, used to drink one called barramundi, but you dont find it in the supermarkets anymore, they used to sell it in tesco and latterly lidl.

I also used to make wine from kits from a company called the art of brewing, you'd get around 20-25 bottles for 30 quid and never had a bad bottle yet from a kit from that company.

I quite like a cava as well, will probably buy a bottle for hogmanay even though Im not really drinking wine just now.

I also quite like the fair trade wines you get from the co-op and asda used to do a couple of really nice red fair trade wines but they dont stock them anymore.
  • Hmmm it’s an interesting question and relative to individualscircumstances I guess. I remember when I was at uni I had to make do with £1.50for a 2 litre bottle of cider! So it truly is relative to one’s own tastes andof course income.

Arguably someone who owns say £20k a year and spends £5 on abottle is no different than someone earning £200k and spending £50 on a bottle(lets no debate earnings after tax for simplicity!)

Home. I’d spend anywhere from £5-£15 from a supermarketdependant on offers they have at the time or my favourite bottle.

Restaurant. There are not many restaurants that sellexpensive wine anyway, as others have said here, £20-£40 is most common formost restaurants, £70 as OP mentions would be a decent bottle I’d imagine, something like a Barolo, St Julian etc. However in an extremely nice restaurantI once had a 1982 Chateau Palmer at £400 it really was incredible! OK I wouldn’torder that often, maybe once a year on a special occasion, but again it’srelevant to individual circumstances and a Uni student would aver that £40 abottle is ridiculous and can’t be worth. A Russian oligarch may argue the £400 ChateauPalmer is on the cheap side!

I don’t think there is a right or a wrong as long someoneremains sensible within their budget and truly enjoys the wine they drink.

Given that the cost of tax and transportation are broadly similar between bottles, it's fair logic. But most people wouldn't choose to set themselves a minimum nutritional standard and then buy the cheapest food available that achieves that regardless of what it tastes like. They vary what they have, they try new things, they spend a bit more when they fancy a treat. So why the snobbery against those who approach wine in the same way?

A lot of wines that are £5 and under actually taste very nice. Also, a lot of people dont vary what they eat, you get people who stick very much to the same things and wont try anything new.

I cant justify spending £20 or even £10 on a bottle of wine, if I were still drinking wine. My finances are such that that £20 would be better off spent on food.

It doesnt bother me if people spend £10 on wine when I wanted to spend £5 or even £3. But surely it goes both ways, if you can find a decent wine for £5 as opposed to £10 or £20 then why not try it?

I rarely drink wine in restaurants, the mark up can be ridiculous. It may be normal for some people to drink a £70 bottle of wine in a restaurant, Id need to be earning a very good wage to even contemplate doing that. Also, Ive had friends who would never ever in a million years consider drinking a bottle of wine under £5. Until they tried a couple.

Everyone has their own opinions. You can get 250ml glasses of wine in home bargains for 49p. If someone wanted to drink that, fine. If someone wanted to drink a £20 bottle of wine, each to their own really.

I buy my reds from Naked Wines so get a pretty good choice, but stay around the lower £7 level.
We do get the Tesco glitch and stock up on cheaper wines discounted to £2-3 a bottle.
my wife like Gallo Summer Red, but we only ever buy that on offer <£5 a bottle.

What is a reasonable price to spend on red wine at a nice restaurant?
You can generally at least double the supermarket price.
I did read that the second cheapest wine is usually most profit as people don't want to look stingy by buying the cheapest.

What is the most you have ever spent on a bottle when celebrating a special occasion??
About £80 for a bottle of champagne, though I'm not a fan.

Also feel free to let me know if you have found any decent bottles of red wine in the supermarket that you feel beats more expensive bottles :)
Lidl do a few good ones sometimes..it's a case of googling for wine blogs to see what those with more experienced pallettes think, though your mileage may vary.

    Exactly!

And of course an individual's financial situation and therefore budget comes into it a little too.

Some people may be able to afford to spend £15 on a bottle of wine but are happy drinking £5 per bottle.

As long as you enjoy the wine you're buying (and can afford it) who cares what you pay?
  • Does he? Really? I adore wine and have pretty expensive tastes because I've plumped for bordeaux as my favourite region. But I know what's 'normal' and what's only for the likes of the very rich and I know that the average person would find £80 for a bottle of wine too much to pay regularly.

Obviously it's absolutely an individual's choice how much they spend but why does your fella think it's 'normal'? That's a bit out of touch really. I know this is going to sound a bit mean but thinking £80 is normal suggests either he's flush and doesn't realise 'how the other half live' or he's a bit of a show-off. Sorry :o

    It's a good point!
If new to a relationship maybe he is trying to show off! Doyou actually like the wine he buys? If not do you tell him? If so is it worthit to you? Does he actually tell you how much he spends or is it or do you onlyknow if you ask him? Conversely if he never mentions the price and it’s youasking and you never drinking it, then maybe he really does enjoy the finerstuff and can actually afford it :) If so you’ll probably make him feel badmentioning it!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2452020/Russian-millionaires-rack-130k-bar-Kitsch-London-just-THREE-hours.html

I just buy what I like, it can be a 6quid bottle or a 30 quid bottle, it depends on what it is for.

A few glasses for myself while watching the X-Factor it will be cheapo stuff, to go with a meal with guests I'll spend a bit more.
