................... my wife and her handbag being seperated would be a disaster for her. Surely if it fitted into the cabin baggage and then being told in had to go into the hold at no extra cost she should be allowed to take her handbag on the flight with her.

Just ignore the scaremongering, she will not have to put her handbag in the hold unless she wants to.

This is a nothing of a story about EJ blown up out of all proportions.

Just to get it clear in my mind as we are travelling by EasJet later this year. Am I correct is saying passengers will not know until you reach the airport as to whether your luggage will be allowed in the cabin or put into the hold, if you have the previously accepted size of cabin baggage. It does seem very hit and miss and my wife and her handbag being seperated would be a disaster for her. Surely if it fitted into the cabin baggage and then being told in had to go into the hold at no extra cost she should be allowed to take her handbag on the flight with her. I have looked at EasyJet website and cannot find where it rules on this point one way or another.

    You are correct.
There is one size of hand luggage that Easyjet guarantee will be allowed in the cabin, 50x40x20cm.
You can take a slightly larger bag, 56x45x25cm, but if the flight is busy you may not be allowed to take this into the cabin and it may have to be put in the hold. You may not be advised of this until you are at the gate.

If you want to be guaranteed that your cabin baggage will be allowed in the cabin with you, just make sure it is the smaller size. Simples.

What the web site does not make clear is what happens to ladies hand bags if your FREE cabin baggage is taken off you in put in the hod at the deaparture gate. Can the ladies take their Hand Bag out and take it on the aircraft with them. Surely this is a point that Easyjet needs to make abundantly clear on their web site. At the moment is seems open to interpretation.

    Yes, as I said earlier
If you main bag goes in the hold they allow you to take items out of it to take into the cabin, handbags included

    Yes they will.

The whole purpose of the exercise is to remove larger luggage to the hold to free up overhead locker space for the smaller size luggage on busy flights. It isn't something that happens on every flights, I've only seen it happen once.

They will let you take your handbag out and take it with you, it will contain your passport, purse, credit cards, travel documents etc., they cannot reasonably expect you to put it in the hold.

The majority of people on this thread have said this, I can only see one different interpretation.

On my last easyJet flight there was confusion at the gate on cabin bag size. It was interesting to see that many had bags that were the guaranteed size or smaller.

It all gets so complicated now, especially with the difference between airlines.
I can hardly be bothered now booking a 99p flight which ends up costing me £99 & having no idea just how little I can take away.

It makes loading up as many pairs of shoe, books & bottles into the car & sitting in roadworks on the M6 seem more appealing :)

Agreed. Off to Ibiza next year. Already booked flights with British Airways. Flights were a little pricey, though at least I'll be flying from an airport actually in London, have a snack on board, and know for certain that I can take a 23kg bag in the hold, plus 2 items of hand luggage. Furthermore, the flights will be at sociable hours (arriving in Ibiza mid-morning, landing back in London early-evening) rather than silly o'clock in the morning. Avios points collected as well.

Nothing worse than starting a holiday with the stress of not knowing where your bags are going to be, and hidden charges not accounted for. I'd much rather spend the extra and not worry.

I would agree that it would be helpful if EasyJet amended their web site regarding taking hand bags etc out of your permitted cabin size if you cabin baggage has to be put in the hold. Then there could be no arguement at the gate as the rules would be in writing!!

Your 'snack' will be a 20g bag of peanuts. I'd rather be able to buy and choose something substantial than go hungry if I didn't have time to eat before the flight.

Have you been on a British Airways flight from London to Ibiza?

According to this guide, in EuroTraveller, there will be a filled croissant for breakfast, and a wrap served for dinner/afternoon tea (Ibiza is a band 3) flight.

Even if I don't have anything to eat before the flight, I will not starve and this is perfectly adequate for a 2.5 hour flight, and is more substantial than the 20g bag of peanuts you mentioned.
