Little bags of different coloured playdough might make nice Christmas Pressies and stocking fillers for little ones :)

    Hi
When my kids were young I had a recipe for home made playdoh, it had powdered cream of tartar, flour, oil ,water and food colouring in it, and you cooked it over a low heat until it stuck together.
My kids are grown up now but I have two little grandchildren who are almost old enough to play with this and Ive lost the recipe. Has anyone got it ?
I hope this is in the right place, if not mods feel free to move it.

    Hi suep,

There's an earlier thread with some recipes so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

  • I love making play dough with my little boy!

Try adding orange or lemon oil for extra sensory enjoyment or even lavender or loose camomile tea for that calming effect! x

Hi, new to this board and finding it so helpful as need to cut back as on maternity leave. I've made hm playdough for my little girl twice now using a recipe off the net, it's basically the same as whats on here but without the cream of tartar... after she has been playing with it a while it starts to go all sticky and I end up binning it the same day so I may as well have bought some instead... is there anything I can do to stop it being sticky and is it just because I'm not using the cream of tartar that it goes like this.

Hi there, finally something I can give some advice about lol!

Choose a cup/mug and use that for your measuring, and a large bowl suitable for microwave (or chuck it in a pan)

2 cups flour (whatever you've got)
    2 cups warm water
    1 cup salt
    2 tablespoons oil
6 teaspoons of cream of tartar (not essential)

powder/poster paint/food colouring to colour (split mixture in half for different colours.

I add one of the following just for a change

-mint flavouring, vanillia essence, cocoa powder, orange flavouring...
(not ideal with children who are likely to scoff it mind you!)

throw it all in a bowl and mix until smooth, put in microwave for a minute at a time mixing inbetween each minute.

when it all comes together and isn't too sticky anymore tip it out on the work top to cool a little until cool enough to knead til its nice and smooth.

leave to cool completely then store in an air tight tub.

if at any point it gets sticky knead in a spinkle of flour keeps for ages.

you can also add glitter or sand at the kneading stage too.

    Enjoy!
