Basic ingredients are flour, salt, oil and food colouring of choice. Can't remember exact quantities...something like 1 lb of flour, half pound of salt, couple tablespoons of oil and enough water to make 'dough'. Knead well, divide into 3 or 4 pieces and add a few drops of different colour to each piece...first job for children is to mix the colour evenly into each piece. Keep in a plastic bag in fridge

  • What also has to be added is water. Can't remember the exact quantity needed as I just use my own judgement but enough added to the flour, oil etc to make a thick batter consistency.

Then you cook it. It might seem sloppy at first but as the grains of flour expand and burst it will soon start to thicken and the you will end up with a lump of dough.

    Have fun :)

This was my Mums recipe and it always worked really well, she used to put maraschino in it so it smelled fabulous

    1 mug salt
    2 mugs SR flour
    2 mugs cold water
    3 tsp cream of tartar
    2 tbsp vegetable oil
    food colouring
    vanilla, almond, peppermint, lemon essence

Mix all together in a large non-stick pan with a wooden spoon. Make sure to scrape all dry ingredients out of the ‘corners’ of the pan or it will burn. The mixture will resemble a batter. Now cook over a low flame stirring continuously. Soon the mixture will begin to form a stiff dough. Allow to cool and knead a bit. Remember to keep the dough in an airtight plastic box.

This is the receipe I always used for my son, but half that amount, still makes plenty. Enjoy the kneading when warm - it's feels scrummy!!! I used to get my son to stand on a chair and stir it, it's like magic as it forms the dough, he loved it - awww brings back all the memories :)
