thanks to everyone for their tips,
went to buy some cream of tartar and found it to be about 1.50 for a smallish pot.
wouldnt it be cheaper just to buy the stuff from say wilkinsons - about 2.99 for 4 containers?Nice to save.0 -
whichever way you go, if it starts to dry out, warm it in microwave, and mix in a little oil, it'll bring it back to life. ours is nearly 2 years old now. our co-op had cream of tartar half price about week ago, may be wortha look if you have one near you.0

As a nursery nurse I'm constantly making play dough, this is the recipe I use...
200g plain flour
100g salt
300ml water
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 tsp cooking oil
food colouring
Mix together in saucepan over a gentle heat until the dough comes together and leaves the sides of the pan. Leave to cool and play!
Glitter, lentils, sand, herbs, pepermint essence, cocoa powder etc can all be added to make the dough more interesting.
Dough keeps well in an airtight container or bag but needs to be replaced every two weeks or more often if it gets sneezed on, licked or looks dirty. Although this dough is not harmful if eaten, children should be discouraged from eating it as the salt content is high and it could lead to kidney damage.

My daughter made playdough at nursery so the teachers sent the recipe home one day. Similar recipe to that already posted :
Ingrediants :- 1 cup flour
- half cup of salt
- drop of cooking oil
- 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
- 1 cup of boiling water
- food colouring of your choice
Put all the ingrediants in a bowl or pan and add the boiling water and mix until a dough is made. Store in an airtight container. If you use cold water instead and cook on top of the cooker until a dough is formed the dough will last a bit longer.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
i love making homemade playdough.
the great thing about it is, i can ask my daugther if she would like some and it take 5 mins to make and she is then happy for rest of day. she loves it. we make a diff colour each time. my son also loves this. it is so cheap and with home made u know excalty what is in it. and if they do try and eat it , it is 100% safe. although the salt content soon makes them spit it out.0 -

Playdough recipe.
Put 1 cup of water, 1 cup of plain flour, 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar, half a cup of salt, 1 tablespoon of cooking oil, and some food colouring or powder paint in a pan. Stir over a medium heat until this makes a dough. Cool. Store in a plastic box in a fridge.
I didn't have an American cup measurer so I used a medium sized mug. I'm also going to experiment with child safe scents. I also found that the pan needed a long soak afterwards. Recipe came from the NHS Birth to Five book.
Anybody have a recipe for gloop?
Rachel.0 -
Is it gloop with cornflour? I just use a box of cornflour and add water - until it looks right. Also you can make slime with soap flakes, water and food colouring. Hth0

Thanks Poohzee. I'll also give the slime a go.0
