I think the recipe I used was one cup of flour, one cup of salt (i.e. equal portions) and enough cooking oil to knead to a pliable dough. We used to have a lot of fun with this when my daughter was little. When you have made your shapes, you can either let them dry out or bake them in the oven. They will dry creamy coloured or bake brown, and you can paint them or whatever. Be careful not to keep them in a damp place, or they will go soft. Good luck

    Here's a recipe I use:

    1 cup of flour
    1/2 cup of salt
2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
    1 cup of water
    1 teaspoon of food colouring
2 teaspoons of oil (baby oil is good too)
(I normally add a drop of essential oil to this mixture too just to make it more interesting. Lavender is good)

Mix the dry ingredients together and then mix the wet ones in and then put all this in a saucepan and heat gently. Keep stirring until it all comes together into a big lump. Be very careful as it can burn so do keep on stirring!!

Let it cool and then it's ready to play with. I normally store this in a sealed plastic tub or thick plastic bag. It keeps for ages :)
My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.

Instead of COOKING the play-doh in a saucepan
    I just use boiling water!
    ..Less washing up!!!!..
  • I use the same recipe as louidog...... if you keep it airtight in the fridge it will keep for AT LEAST 2 months - I have recently thrown a batch away after it was played with for 18months.....

Nice to add glitter too. Also make chocolate smelling before by adding cocoa power, mint by adding mints essence, orange by orange essence (but take care of kiddies with eczema with this as can flare skin up).

You can also add alsorts of stuff to it, cocca powder makes it like chocolate just don't eat it.

At playgroup they once made chocolate one and DD refused to play with it and was almost sick because she though it was poo!! When we got home hubby asked where she had been and she said 'school, and they had poo on the table!!'

She normally eats the salt dough!!!!

My 13 year old would still play with it!!!!! and probably hubby as well.. might make some later to keep the troups happy, they were disgustingly behaved yesterday!
