What does heart burn feel like?
And where does the burning go exactly?
I get this like dry/burning type feeling, feels like it's right at the top of my mouth at the back kinda in my throat, hard to pin point.
Before I thought it was from me being sick and irritating my throat but I've just had it now and I haven't been sick since this morning although I have been coughing a lot.
Or is heart burn nearer your heart like further down your oesophagus? I really have no idea!0 -
Sam it's great to see you here, I can't believe you've got here so quickly!
I've seen results as low as a 1 in 4 chance and ones as high as a 1 in 75000 chance, but no one can tell you there is no chance unfortunately. Then you worry about the 20 week scan and what they look for there so the worry never ends, but don't let it spoil you're excitement.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -

Glad you asked as I don't know either, have had this occasional burning sensation recently at the back of my throat, feel like acid coming up. I thought that might be it but really don't have experience of stuff like that.0 -
Thank you everyone. I was very lucky to fall in the immediate cycle from my mmc but it all felt so yesterday so to speak when I was there waiting. I am so very happy xx3 Children - 2004 :heart2: 2014 :heart2: 2017 :heart2:

This is what I know, or think I know. Whether you call it heartburn, indigestion or acid reflux I think the cause is still the same, gastric acid, it's just different symptoms. Acid reflux is when the acid leaves your stomach and actually comes up your oesophagus, occasionally as high as your throat so you'll feel it burning and can even cause a persistent cough in some people. This acid can damage the lining of your oesophagus if it happens repeatedly so you usually get prescription treatment for it. Indigestion (dyspepsia) is bloating, pain, feeling too full, beching, etc and is more to do with the excess acid in your stomach, so taking things that reduce this help. Heartburn is usually a pressure and burning in your chest/sternum and I don't really know if it differs from the others but it might be just that the acid reflux hasn't got as high as your mouth.
Gaviscon floats on top of your stomach and helps prevent the acid escaping so is best for heartburn/acid reflux. As far as I know it doesn't do anything chemical to your or go in your bloodstream which is why it's good in pregnancy. Rennies and Tums help turn acid in your stomach into water and can be used for indigestion as well as acid reflux but might not be strong enough if it's bad. Ranitidine and brand names such as Zantac actually reduce acid production. However for those that need long term medication to reduce acid production (usually because of persistent acid reflux, indigestion and ulcers) proton pump inhibitors are prescribed such as Omeprozole as they are better for long term use.
This isn't medical advice though, so you should talk to your midwives or GPs and read the leaflets in the medications and follow the instructions. Also the NHS website has good information.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
When I get heartburn it's literally like a burning about where my heart is. I think it's different in different people though.
Went to the pharmacy today and picked up my prescription... 500ml of gaviscon! Never been so excited about a prescription before lol.First date 10.2.2002

Thanks Kynthia & emz.
I'm really not sure if I've got a mild version of it or not but I think I might buy some gaviscon just incase it gets worse or I do develop what is definitely heartburn so I'm not in pain with nothing to treat it with!0 -
got home from work yesterday to my nuchal fold results - 1:50000
Really good news, but it wouldn't have made a difference either way0
