  • I was just wondering about folic acid. I had my 12 week scan on Monday and they've actually dated me further along so I'm 14 weeks tomorrow. Should I just stop the folic acid now?

My only confusion comes from the fact that pregnancy supplements that are taken throughout pregnancy contain the same amount of folic acid that I'm being told to stop taking now.

    Thanks!

I have previously been told that taking folic acid through out your pregnancy will not do any harm (certain foods contain folic acid naturally) we are asked to take extra folic acid during the first 3 months as this is when the neural tube and spine is developing and folic acid facilitates to healthy formation. after 12 weeks the spine is formed and taking extra folic acid is not likely to have any benefit but at the same time wont harm.

Good Luck Firey! will be lurking for news. :j

Raspberry I've been taking pregnacare which includes folic acid (and lots of other vitamins etc) since I found out I was pregnant - I'm 24 weeks now and still taking it. If in doubt I would just keep taking it. I have mentioned that I'm still taking it to midwife and haven't been told to stop taking it.

  • Thanks for the replies. I had tried taking the supplements but I'm not the best pill swallower and they're all huge! Coupled with the fact I'm still suffering with sickness quite a bit I've only been able to manage the folic acid on it's own as it's a tiny pill!

Pregnacare are massive! I have to have them at the start of a meal so the food can push them down if necessary ha!

I got told to carry on with pregnacare because they have adcal in, that came from the midwife I saw after my 12 werk scan... not sure if its related to having high bmi or pcos though.

I'm the same - I'll tell you what I do which helps, I take a big gulp of water and hold the water in my mouth, then I just pop the pill into my mouth and swallow it with the water down in one. That way I never feel like the tablet is at the back of my throat.

Also taking pills with a fizzy drink I find tends to help.

  • I'll give that a go, thanks!
  • If you struggle taking tablets try drinking water through a straw to take them, kind of sucks the pill down and makes it easier!

  • Thanks Clair & NeverDespaireGirl.

Raspberry - I've been on mixed BVits which includes folic acid for years, after I was prescribed it for a combination of low mood and tingling fingers... Folic Acid helps the nerves electric signals I think so it won't harm you to keep taking it.
I also have to take pills with fizzy drink in the same way as MYSecret Alias. I'm on 7 a day now.. That's fun.

Sunshine - I'm on Adcal as a separate vitamin supplement. It's Calcium plus Vit D. I do have a higher BMI but not PCOS.
The Dr gave it to me at about 13 weeks. The Midwife commented on him doing so! But in the sense "that's early but at least he cares!"... I think many ladies get it for the last trimester; and that makes sense to me since after 20ish weeks the bones are being formed properly (up till then it's just cartalidge).

AFM, I have felt quite good these last few days (touch wood). Apart from being in excruciating pain with my hip last night. It woke me up, kind of a cold constant pain deep in my right hip. It came out of know where and disappeared after 15 minutes or so. I'd been restless all evening and couldn't get comfy in bed but hope it doesn't come back.
