  • I was just going to say I'm in a very similar boat, and I have a maternity meeting tomorrow so will let you know what they say but then I read the end bit of your post and your meeting is tomorrow too!

I have holiday left this year, I'm hoping that I can carry over a few days and use some from next year so I can take a week (ideally two) holiday before starting my maternity leave. I'm hoping to finish at the end of feb and have 4 weeks off before my EDD. My commute is more than a three hour round trip so I just don't want to be doing it right up to when I'm due!

My work allows you to carry it over. However I think it varies by employer (happy to be corrected on that).

If they don't let you carry it over, you could always use it at the very end of your leave year (esp if it corresponds with the end of your mat leave) to extend your mat leave and get paid for it :)

    Morning ladies,

Took the day off work today because its scan day!! I am so excited to see little bud again, roll on 1350! :rotfl:Glad I took leave as this week has been so busy, I cant believe its Friday already so this morning I am relaxing before heading to the hospital and then to my mums for tea. :D

21 weeks today and this pregnancy is going to quick, having a chat with my manager yesterday and she basically said she better start sorting out my job role and either get someone employed or send it to another office as I will not be doing the role when I return from mat leave!

I have decided I am going to finish on the 31st January (37wk), 3 weeks before due date. I have a feeling January will go very slow!! My holidays run jan-dec too and I have to take any holidays earn before hand - I think that will be 1!! I will be returning to work around October but going to take holidays to maybe November, I need to have a meeting with HR as it is all confusing. Some of the girls say I will have bank holidays to take as well as normal leave but I don't have these to take normally as the office is automatically closed on a bank holiday. (in the past I have worked shifts and always had holidays as 25+8 lieu days for example, this job is an office job mon-fri, 9-5 and only get holidays, no lieu days as office close on bank hols.)

Laurablue, my commute is a three hour round trip too so I'm hoping to take 2 weeks leave and then start maternity leave just over 2 weeks before my EDD. Hopefully my last day in the office will be 31st Jan. I'm able to carry my leave over but our year is April to Match, so I'll be expected to use most of this year's first. I read at work that I get back the bank holidays and new policy is to tag them onto the end if your maternity leave rather than take them when you like on your return.

I haven't had any pee pots back as most if mine have been sent off for cultures. They say I don't have a UTI when I do, then do when I dont, then say I might have thrush when I don't, then confirm I'm right and I don't! Madness! :)

I felt my first 'bubble pop' movement on 18+3 and I was so pleased. I now think I felt things esrlier that I didn't recognise.

So excited as our scan is Monday!!! I'll be 20 weeks exactly.

I have no idea about maternity leave, really need to think about when I'm going to finish work but I plan on working pretty late as I can't afford to take time off before baby's here, would rather save it all for time with my little man! I should be able to save about 2 weeks holiday though so going to take that before starting my leave and should be coming back to work just after the new holiday entitlement starts (mine runs Aug-Jul, annoyingly) so may be able to tack some more holiday on at the end or use the days to give me some 2/3 day weeks for a bit. :) Need to ask about bank holidays, don't know if we accrue them on ML or not.

Gosh, it's so exciting thinking about all this! :)

OH and I have planned a little day trip to London at the end of November to see a matinee show of The Lion King and do some Christmas shopping- it'll be a long day but I'm excited, we won't be able to just take off and do things like that soon enough! :) Going down to London tomorrow too with some lovely MSE friends and I'm really looking forward to it but I'm scared of falling asleep on the train back home and missing my stop as it's going to be a long day!

Hope your scan goes well MrsBunny! :)

squirrel I'm exactly the same as you, finishing in March with our holiday year running Jan-Dec.
Ive been told that any holiday I've accrued up to then I can take before I finish (so about a week) and then the rest I can take at the end of my mat leave.

However they have said I only accrue the 25 days and not the 8 bank holidays. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else gets the bank holidays?

I've been googling it and I think I should get them too. Am going to give ACAS a ring at some point to clarify it all (my HR dept are notorious for getting things wrong).

Theres a section on here about mat leave and holiday.

    http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/work_e/work_time_off_work_e/holidays_and_holiday_pay.htm#holiday_and_maternity-paternity_if_you_are_sick

It also states that if you work full time you are entitled to 28 days paid leave per year but that a company can include bank holidays in this total.
Surely I should at least accure the full 28 days and not just the 25?

    Its a right mindfield.....

Hope you have a lovely scan Mrsbunny

Ooooh Birdie, lion king is amazing!!

  • I just had my HR meeting, I was told my bank holidays do get accrued so I'll have an extra 8 days on top if my 25 days holiday. I have to say I thought that was standard practice but not sure of the legislation around it.

Thanks for letting me know, really hoping its standard and as such I can force HR, but knowing this place its probably not legislated for and they can get out of it. :(
Its nearly 2 whole weeks extra!!

I think it depends on your contract. If you contractually get the bank holidays as leave, then they have to let you accrue them over your mat leave (as a 'non-cash benefit').

I've just been reading my company maternity policy and was happy to see that bank holidays are accrued for us. All extra time off is good with me! :)
