  • Im in a similar situation wereby I was with AOL for a couple of years & had been paying for the highest band for months, (as they had said I could get it) then it came to light I was actually not able to recieve this speed & they sent me a cd of an encyclopedia for my computer to compensate me :| (Thanx alot.. Not).

Anyway a couple of months ago I thought im going to go to Sky as they were offerin me a good deal a lot less then £24.99 a month (which I was paying as AOL had notified me I could get 8mb in my area now). & when I rang AOL to cancel the guy actually said to me if you take out a new 12 month subscription we will put u on the 2mb package and charge u £14.99 a month but give u a free Netgear Router, he also let slip that I could only recieve 2mb anyway were I live (Yes thats twice they told me I could get a higher speed which I couldnt actually get!! Grr.. No free Cd this time though :| ..lol although I did get my first month free), But anyway rather then go through the hassle of switching I thought id take it as the extra £5 a month compared to sky I thought I would recoupe from the sale of the router. I think I got £32 for it on ebay.. Now im kind of thinking I should of swithced though... Especially as people r mentioning there tied into 18 month contracts!! Im sure he said 12 to me!!

Does anyone know how Sky broadband works, I mean is it through the Phone Line like AOL, so I would only get 2mb with them aswell? Or is it like they have in america through a sattelite or some other way??

Technology is crazy! Cant keep up..

I must add .. Ive been with AOL for about 5 years now.. What ive said above is the only problem ive had with them, ive had excellent service at all times from them, customer service has been great over the years.. Really helpfull, even helped me with things that really wernt even there problem! :j

Ive got the £15.99 month 1 meg. Spose to be going up to 2meg dont know when though. My contract ran out last month so I pre ordered the £17.99 laptop deal. Only problem is my phone line is about to be cut off. So Im going to have to change to an ISP that does phone line rental. Unless of cause AOL pull their finger from their anal orafice and start doing phone line rental.:D
To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....
  • Can anyone tell me if 40gb is enough for me? All i do on the net is surf sites like this one, and play onlines games, banking etc.
    What uses the bandwith?

I ask this because im fed up of being ignored by AOL when im paying £29.99 a month, and am going to move to Sky at only £5 a month, with a 40GB monthly limit.

Downloading videos/apps etc uses up the bandwith.

    40GB should be fine.

ive been with aol for yrs now. (silver 1mb at 17.99).
about 6 months ago i told them to cancell and they offered me the silver service with 2mb for 9.99! and a free router.
only down side was a new 12 month contract.
    so i went for it.
all was well for some time, but since talktalk has taken over, i get dropped connections fairly regular now, never had a problem before.

moral is, aol is good value but the service is hit and miss sometimes.
    Get some gorm.

I'm tired of reading this. By the way, I'm by no means disputing what you're saying. If you have a fault, you have a fault.

But I'd like to point out that nothing whatsoever has technologically changed since the takeover. Even now, TalkTalk has their own LLU network, AOL has its' own LLU network. Other aspects of the ISPs' infrastructure are also completely independent. CPW didn't buy AOL and replace all the systems with TalkTalk clones. Everything is exactly as it was - even the customer service systems, processes, tools and staff.

Those faults occurring since the takeover are certainly not a result of CPW acquiring AOL UK. Unfortunately, on any ISP's broadband network, faults occur.

I havnt had any problems at all lately & im on-line 12+ hours a day & alot of the time I am in the vacinity of my laptop so I would notice.

Maybe it depends on the area ur in or the problem is todo with the phone line not Aol :)

    Just a thought :D

  • i've been with aol for 5 years, i currently pay 9.99 a month for 8mbps but can only get 4mbps, my line is capable of getting 6mbps but i just never get what i'm paying for, why is this? i use a bt voyager 105 modem but also have a netgear wireless router and when i used this was only getting 2mbps so i stopped using it. as you can tell i don't have a clue when it comes to computers!

also would i be able to get the free laptop aol have on offer if i agree to pay 19.99 pm?
  • Hi there,

    AOL are driving me mad!

After reading this thread, I decided to call AOL.

I have been with AOL for about 5 years now, and am currently paying 17.99 a month for 1mb connection, but have been promised an upgrade to 2mb for the last 6 months! I called them today, and told them I thought £17.99 a month was too expensive for a 1mb connection. Got the usual excuses about why speed upgrade had not been increased.

Asked for a reduction in price, but got nowhere. Best they could do was add AOL talk for 6 months, still at £17.99 a month. Explained I didn't want AOL talk, so got offered 8mb connection (which they said I can get immediately, despite waiting 6 months for my current upgrade!) for £17.99 a month, but with an 18 month contract, which I don't really want.

Any idea how I can get a better deal from them? Don't really want to leave, but don't think I am getting a very good deal.

    Cheers
    Rob

You don't have to leave, just threaten to leave.

I read about the reduction in charges 12 months ago. I was paying £17.99/ month for the 1GB Silver.
I rang up and got nowhere the first time. But I had read that you just have to keep trying. After 3 attempts I ended up getting £9.99/ month + one month free + a free Netgear router (had to agree to a new 12 month contract, which was fine). But I'm still waiting for the upgrade to 2 GB which is supposed to have happened by the end of this month!

So ring up and ask for the cancellations department, tell them you want to leave as you know other customers are getting better deals (as above) and stick to your guns. if you don't get a deal you are happy with, tell them you'll think about it, then ring back 15 mins later and try again. The end result will be you WILL get a better deal.
