I'm also on AOL Gold paying £27+ a month (foolishly I signed up for the McAfee security software and after the free period tried to cancel it. Despite the website giving clear instructions how to cancel it online I still get billed for it every month - why not phone up ...don't ask!). Anyway the AOL Gold is through NTL/Virgin cable and after I asked about switching packages they said I was stuck with that as that was all they would offer through cable. I then asked about phoneline broadband and they were adament that it would be £24.99 at best. So switched to cancelation department and waiting for a call back to see whether they will do me a new phoneline broadband package (I am in an unbundled area).

10 years with AOL and never a problem, or one that wasn't quickly sorted, bit disappointed they didn't pass on the new package info to old customers, or ones maybe thy thought I didn't havea BT landline to use?

The best i could get out of them yesterday was silver for £14.99 a month on an 18 month contract and (another!) free wireless router.
I have gone with this as i still have enough AOL reward points for another free 4 months plus the sale of the router should cover another 2 months, so hard to get a better deal elsewhere.
    WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
    Blimey what was that ?
    That was your life mate
Oh I wasn’t quite ready can I have another go ?
Sorry mate only one per person.
  • £14.99 Silver - Is that because you are in an unbundled (LLU never) area?

    What are AOL reward points?

And........do you know what router they are sending you? After I negotiated the £9.99 Platinum package (and free anytime calls or 6 months) I was told that if I wanted a Netgear router I would have to pay £25. I decided to go for it, but a Thomson (horrible black) router turned up. When I phoned to ask why, the lady said that she thought the Thomson ones had been discontinued, but they couldn't guarrentee what I would be sent. She told me to keep the Thomson one and that she would refund the £25. Her advice was to go into any Carphone Warehouse and they will sell me the Netgear router for £25. What a strange company AOL are !!!!

He just said that that's the only offer available on my exchange, no idea about LLUs etc
AOL points are earned by using an AOL / MBNA credit card you get a point for every pound spent. 2400 points = 1 months subscription @ £15.
Admittedly that does not look too tempting but then consider that you earn points on interest free cash advances and balance transfers so after a few £13k advances / transfers over the last year or so its quite a handy saving.
No idea what router they are sending, it will be straight on E Bay anyway, i currently have the Thomson one and it works perfectly so not too bothered how it looks or what colour it is.

I am a loyal AOL customer but they are testing my resolve to the limit. I am a Silver customer and am paying £17.99 for 1 mb. They have promised an upgrade to 2mb but the date for that keeps being delayed.

I have been with them on silver for 3 years and dial up before that. But the truth is the service is now not as reliable as it was.It used to be a very good service.

I contacted them yesterday on online help and was told that on July 21st I had been upgraded to between 2 and 8 mb.I pointed out that the service at times was slow for 1mb so how could this be true?

I rang them later ( India I think) to be told that it was a 2mb service. I had used a speedtest earlier which had said 520k. I pointed this out and said earlier in the day I had been told I could easy be getting 5mb from them. They said I would have to accept 520k. I said that I did not considering what I am paying and asked for the cancellations department. They then cut me off!

So customer service is at a low.Any suggestion for what I should do?
I do not want to storm off in a huff as it would take me a while to get connected elsewhere but it seems impossible to be treated fairly.

    shaunrc,

Apologies for the clearly crap service - I hate to hear of it. Kindly PM me your screen name and I'll look into your case personally.

    Hi Jammin

    Thanks for your reply.

This post comes with apologies as I do not know how to PM. My screename is shaunrc999.

I have seen the earlier posts in here and am in a llu area. As I explained above contacting AOL has left me more confused than when I started! I started feeling I was being overcharged for what I am getting and that if anything it is getting worse....

i have been with AOL for about 5 years and like you was on the silver paying 17.99 for 1mb, unacceptable IMHO when people are getting 2mb silver for 14.99! knew this and planned to sort it out by moving providers, last week i got a letter saying that i could switch to silver 8mb for 17.99. called them and they dropped the price to 14.99 but only when i complained that i had been paying 17.99 for ages for 1mb when they kept saying i would soon be getting 2mb asked to cancel and stayed steadfast mentioned that i knew of people who were getting the 8mb service for 9.99. straightaway was offered this deal with AOL talk free for 6 months ,and now i get 5.5mb for 9.99 instead of 1mb for 17.99! so you could try this if you are adamant to go they will not want to lose you. i really think that when they dropped the silver price to 14.99 they should have brought their present customers price plans
    into line.
