Platinum "up to 8mb" @ £9.99 is only for LLU now / later customers.
Platinum "up to 8mb" @ £17.99 is LLU never customers.
Either way, AOL Talk is compulsory.
Dellfanatic - if you PM me you screenname I'll have a look in to your speed issue.
This is rediculous, why make AOL talk compulsory?. I currently live with my parents and I don't use the phone at all and my parents don't use the internet. (or to be more accurate can't even switch a computer on).
Therefore I pay for the internet and they pay for the phone. There is no way that I would want their call charges on my AOL account, it would be too messy. I'm sure this kind of situation is similar in a lot of households.
So has anyone actually been able to get 8Meg without taking a call package for £9.99 from AOL?.0 -

I understand the position you are in. AOL Talk is compulsory because AOL foresee that they will make money from the telephone usage, and so can afford give you the cheaper broadband. Again, PM me you screenname and I'll see what I can do for you.0 -
Hmm, i think i deserve an upgrade, ive been with AOL now for about 8 years. I was about to try ringing AOL but i suppose the account holder will need to speak to them (my mum) What info will i need to supply. By the way, i do not need the phone package or anything, just 8 meg for £20 or less would be cool.
Jammin - I completely missed how people sending you their screen names would help but if i pm you mine would you try something? if you canWould you need my screen name or the account holders?
Thanks0 -

Right, I think I'm going to try this, been with AOL broadband for the best part of 3 years and currently on silver for 17.99 a month, got a letter through the post this morning offering the same price for 8mbps, as if, seeing what you can get on here!
Is is pretty hit and miss depending on who you get at the call centre though? I've never been very good at haggling, and the other problem is the account holder's my dad, and let's just say he's so technically incompetent he wouldn't know where to start with asking over the phone (he doesn't have a clue what 2mbps etc means)

You can check if AOL have unbundled your exchange by entering you phone number into this website.
If "Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area. The following services are available in your location:" is followed by "AOL LLU", then AOL have unbundled your exchange.

Cheers to the OP
Just called AOL and the 1st guy would only offer me a £24.99 package. Asked to speak to the 'Cancellations Dept' and after the guy checked my details (my contract expired 02/05/07) I was immediately offered the PLATINUM (free weekend & evening calls for 6 months) package at £9.99 !!!
I did quote the SKY deal for £9.99 at the beginning and he said that they could match that. I know the SKY offer is up to 16mbs, but I dont think you'd ever get that speed.
As for AOL Talk, there is no contract - I made sure of that AND you can simply cancel after 5.5 months of free evening & weekend calls, and revert back to BT.Some days you're the bird......and some days you're the statue :cool:0 -
I phoned up last week to try to get the £9.99 deal (currently £24.99 pm 8mb). I was told that I could have £17.99 pm with the phone call package, but when I pressed quite hard he said I could get it without the call package for the same price (?) hope this helps someone...
I said no, I was not happy (still wanted £9.99 deal) and he said that he would email me the MAC in 24-48 hours, but over 1 week later no code. I was about to phone again and checked up on this thread first. Seems as though I have not got the llu unbundled thingy (well we do live in the country) and I suppose that 17.99 is the best I will get. Oh poo!
well £7 a month is a start I suppose...:(
It's only a game

Hi , I am a bit confused with the meaning of LLu etc !
I am currently on AOL at £19.99 a month and looking for a better deal now, Sky for some resaon could only offer me their highest package at £17 a month, i was hoping to get their Sky Surf and call package but that was going to cost £53 instead of the hoped for £36.
I tried the link above and got the following message :
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
Any ideas what this means ?
ThanksWHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
Blimey what was that ?
That was your life mate
Oh I wasn’t quite ready can I have another go ?
Sorry mate only one per person.0 -

Last week I re-negoiated my contract with AOL from Gold to Platinum for a 12 month contract of £9.99 a month with free calls (evening & weekend). When I asked at the time I was told that I would receive notification within 24 hours and I would then need to switch off the call charges on the BT website. But.........I still haven't received anything from AOL, apart from a message today saying that I had now been connected to Broadbandand that I had to agree to a new 18 month contract.
In addition, I asked for a wireless router and the guy said that he would send me a Netgear one (worth £80), but yesterday a Thomson router turned up in an AOL Gold package. Do AOL know whet the hell they are doing as I should now be on Platinum???? Couple of questions:-
1) Has anyone re-negoiated a 12 month contract or are they only 18 months?
2) Which is better - the Netgear or Thomson wireless router?
3) How long does it take to switch over from Gold to Platinum. Do AOL advise you when it has been done?
4) I now see that AOL Talk are offering Free Calls for 6 months (day and night) not just evening and weekends. Can I insist that I should get that offer?
Why are things never as easy as they should be ???????Some days you're the bird......and some days you're the statue :cool:0
