my 18 year old nephew works for tescos. He saved up and bought a £6k motor; cash. So i think they are on a fair wage as it is!!

Yeah, £6 an hour is VERY fair isn't it:rolleyes: I saved up to buy a car at age 18 too but was only on a pittance at the time, it doesn't take too much effort for someone that age to save a decent amount these days.

We tip if the driver offers to take the bags into the kitchen, only a quid but we thought if everyone else did the same it would give the driver a reasonable wage, it seems we are in a small minority though!

Yes I too have wondered if its ok to tip as you have paid in advance - I always tip taxis and barstaff at the end of a night.

I have a relative who works as a binman and after learning how much he gets in tips at xmas (2 men on a van in north yorks get more than 2 grand between them and a kitchen full of booze each) - I decided to get our binmen a 24 pack of tinnies they were very pleased and now they take anything I ask (garden waste etc).

I dont mind tipping for good service.
Aint got a signature - as I cant think of anything world wisely to say.

Why should delivery drivers get tips to top their wages while the rest of the people in the retail industry get nothing? In my experience the delivery drivers have got the easiest job of the lot, they don't have to deal with customers queries/problems as much as those in store etc have no managers on their back all day and can listen to their own music in their vans.

Personally I think some drivers are worth tipping, they aren't paid an enormous amount and the job can be quite physically demanding !, yes I speak from experience, did it part time as a second job some years ago.

So please be nice and remember these guys do a hard job in all weather and some of the guys will go the extra mile to help the customers.

    NO!!!

Especially since they used to unpack the crates and hand the bags to me but now just watch as I struggle to unpack the crates myself!!

Its all about choice, I choose to tip my driver if he/she is helpful and friendly, you choose not too, fair enough.

Don't believe that they don't have to deal with customers problems/queries though, I would say they are right at the sharp end actually. Wrong items sent, items not sent, late deliveries damaged goods. Lots of reasons that some people might give the driver some grief.

No never. Don't tip take away deliveies either. MAybe I am tight, but we don't live in the US. As someone else has said you don't tip the person who did the shopping and nor do you tip anyone in public service. That is what your delivery charge is for. Do you tip the girl on checkout?

Did the person have to load the van, lifting some quite heavy weights above head height ?, or did they carry bags of shopping up several flights of stairs?, will they carry the shopping through to kitchen for an elderly person.

Tipping should not be expected but if you feel the driver has done a good job, been polite and helpful then why not show them you appreciate good service?.

But really the driver is getting tipped for sitting in a van, putting his right foot on the floor and taking some shopping out of a van and putting it on your door step while the person at the other end who has gone around the store picking what you want, pushing a trolley round is on a lower wage than the driver and gets nothing in return. Neither does the person who filled the shelves in the first place to make sure that your order was available.

It just seems a bit strange that tipping drivers is generally accepted and even expected in some cases when they have done no more than anybody else in the chain and quite often have the easiest job in terms of physical effort.

As others have said accepting tips is a sackable offence in tesco/sainsburys/asda.... so no I don't offer them. Instead if you are happy with the service offered by a particular person contact the manager of the store or head office as the person will get recognition and will often be rewarded. I have a family member that works for sainsburys and he is regularly rewarded with shining stars, I forget what you actually get but its pretty good (something like a £25 voucher?)
