When my Son was a Tesco delivery driver he would quite often get tips , the odd two pounds here £5 there and at Christmas more , some weeks better than others . It depended on the area he was delivering to . Although they never expected tips.
Never pay more than you have too

Got tesco delivery last night & the thought never crossed my mind to tip the driver...brings me back to the scene in Resevoir dogs about tipping!!!
It's a great day for singing a song / It's a great day for moving along / It's a great day for morning to night / It's a great day for everybody's plight.

Your father pedals car telephones at a 300 percent markup. Your mother works on heavy commission at a camera store. Graduated to it from espresso machines. Hah!

The only people I tip are taxi drivers and only when they just shut up and take me to where I want to go without talking drivel the whole way.

I also asked this a few months ago here in the forum, because not being british, I wasn't really sure of what to do in these situations, and realized that most MSEs don't tip at all. Personally I I hate tipping at restaurants. (I've never had service worth tipping and am always charged the "discretionary" tip. I hate it.)

In terms of delivery guys, I used to always tip (1-2£) the sainsbury guys since they were really nice. With Tesco, only once did I actually feel the tip was earned since the gentleman was really helpful and nice. Interestingly, I always have the money ready for them, but most of the times they just drop off the groceries at the reception of the building and leave - I find that extremely rude (especially since the ad for tesco is "we deliver to your fridge door"). Then I have to carry lots of bags to the lift (the last time I had about 30 bags with loose items).

Last time the delivery was 30 min late, they did not all to warn, the groceries were dropped at reception. No way I'm giving a tip, even though I can empathise with the delivery person (I'm certain he doesn't get paid that much). However, the delivery people should also empathise with us: when you're having a bad day you just want people not to be unpleasant to you and, unfortunately, my delivery experiences have mostly been stressful and unpleasant.

Taking all of your coments into consideration, and given that the delivery people are always different, I think I will stop tipping. In the unlikely event the delivery person is nice to me, they will get a nice tip.

I wouldn't ever think of tipping. Because cash isn't changing hands at all and you have already effectively paid your 'service charge' by paying for the delivery there would be no need to tip IMHO. You wouldn't tip your checkout operator would you?

When I worked at Tesco (not as a driver) it was very clear that we weren't supposed to take tips or any gifts. I carried someones large crate of beer to his car when he had his hands full of other shopping, and he was insistant on giving me a £1 (woo - although it did increase my hourly wage up a big 20%) despite telling him about 20 times Im not allowed. It beat pushing trollies for 2 minutes.

Personally I hate tipping, it makes me feel awkward and uncomfortable. Plus what about all the people on checkouts who are extremely friendly and helpful? There are loads of individuals that go out of their way to help customers without thinking about it that people never consider.

i sometimes feel i ought to tip - but don't want to start doing it as it'll be expected.

also - i'm paying specifically for the delivery service anyway, whereas with pizza etc deliveries, the delivery charge is usually included

the thing i think is despicable is the fact that the drivers are given targets and get penalised should they not deliver in time: this would only seem to encourage them to try and dump the shopping as quickly as possible

No never. Don't tip take away deliveies either. MAybe I am tight, but we don't live in the US. As someone else has said you don't tip the person who did the shopping and nor do you tip anyone in public service. That is what your delivery charge is for. Do you tip the girl on checkout?
