  • Thanks for the input folks.

Really frustrating that I set up a x-o account before I left on my hols and now I can't remember my username. There is an automated password reset but I seem to have forgotten my the username, idiot that I am. I've emailed and tried phoning but no response and engaged.

I can't even remember if I actually chose a username or if its one of those websites that just uses your email or account number as said username. Does anyone know if the latter is the case? As I am fairly sure it will be easier to just apply for the shares through x-o rather than direct and then transfer them!

Finally made the decision to apply - first real foray into shares other than via company schemes. Have been meaning to move some funds from cash ISA into a S&S ISA for a long time but never taken the plunge. If these shares do surge when they start trading then I'll cash in and put it into the S&S ISA - if not then I'll hold and see what happens longer term.

No, with X-O you get to choose what your usename is yourself.

x-o usually respond to emails; they are probably overwhelmed with Royal Mail admin. and new accounts right now.
  • Yeah I figured as much! My own fault of course. It wouldn't have done any harm to write down my blasted username.

I got fed up with scraps of paper all over the house with names and numbers on, you want to join something like LastPass to store everything.

the media are talking up the prospects of quick profits from Royal Mail. i haven't really studied it closely enough, but i might jump onto the bandwagon tomorrow.

    from St James's Place:

    "Returned to senders
The Royal Mail float has unsurprisingly grabbed market attention as a large-scale investment opportunity. Although extra publicity for the float has come in the shape of threatened strike action, there has not been the level of fanfare that accompanied the privitasations of the 1980s, such as the British Gas ‘Ask Sid’ advertising campaign. City analysts expect the shares will be priced at the top end of the 260p to 330p indicative range which would value the company at around £3.3 billion – and there is anticipation that the price could close at 380p when it is announced at the end of the week. Shares will start trading on the London Stock Exchange on 15 October. Panmure Gordon said that the underlying value could be in the region of £4.5 billion.
There are hopes in the City that the largest government flotation for two decades will attract US interest too. However, there are misgivings that the flotation has been rushed at the expense of taxpayers, with this week’s 8 October deadline for retail and institutional applications for the offer considered by many as too soon. The government in the run-up to a general election in 2015 might hope to be able to look back on the privatization and court comparisons with the heady days of the late 1980s. A year is a long time in politics, but, perhaps, next year’s party conference season will brim with talk of an economy that has stepped further away from the brink – and with ideas on how to create wealth for Britain rather than manage its cost of living."

    OK, just back from holiday.

What is the best way to buy these Royal Mail shares asap. Can anyone recommend any good broker/broker deal on these shares and how it works?

Many thanks to anyone who replies.

You can only apply for max 10k in one name so you would need 10 people to apply, then sell to you afterwards.

This is still no guarantee - looks like is well oversubscribed so I am expecting to get a lot less that the 4k I've asked for
