    Clicky link>Windows 7 Home Premium SP1-U ISO (Refresh) 32bit

Choose to save and when the download is complete, pop a blank DVD into the optical drive. Right click on the newly downloaded file and choose 'Open with' and then 'Windows Disc Image Burner'. Once the Image Burner opens, place a tick with the 'Verify Image' box and click on 'Burn'.

Put that aside for the re-installation of Windows 7 once you've backed up your data.

You can use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer your data to the external hard drive. The instructions shown are for from PC to PC, but you will see the option to send to an external hard drive.
Once you have run the clean install, you plug the hard drive in and use Easy Transfer to transfer what you want back.

Once you have installed all updates, I would use Macrium Reflect to make an image of your drive.

You don't have to be 'Techie minded'. You just need to be able to follow step by step instruction. You won't be left to your own devices.

You'll need a blank DVD or USB pen drive with at least a 4GB capacity for the clean install of Windows 7.

I don't understand your question about the backup.

they are all good, but that doesn't mean they cant fail, so dont put all your eggs in one basket.

500GB under £40 for a portable drive, nothing to lose.
