:rotfl: Pre totally automated electronic banking days used to withdraw money at remote 'branch' but if ever had a cheque to pay in went straight to main town centre branch!

I guess, in retrospect that was the equivalent of a 0% £100 overdraft faclity & if we do all of those inflation/cost of living % increases .. wohoo wohoo!!:rotfl:
  • The week after my LBM when everything was maxed out & none of the card issuers or my bank would help I ebayed the entire contents of my home except for my bed, fridge, washing machine, laptop (necessary as I work in IT), a tv stand& portable tv.

Everything that didn't sell on ebay went to a car boot sale the weekend after & basically been living ever since with the few bits that didn't sell at either with just the addition of an inflatable sofa & a throw to cover it with. (saved a fortune by not needing contents insurance as well)

I also lived on porridge & beans on toast for that first month as well (visited mam & dad for sunday lunches though)

I did the rolled up loo roll thing.
Before kids I worked in a nursing home and if we did a 12 hour shift we got a free cooked meal (because we only got 1/2 hour for lunch and had told the boss that if they couldn't provide us any access to a hot meal during a 12 hour shift and wouldn't give us time to go home, they had to provide one!) I used to swap my shifts around so that I did 4 12 hours a week or more so I didn't have to buy food!
I also (shamefully) used to save up my toilet needs until I could find an unused toilet so I didn't have to use my own loo roll. I also used to take extra (as a tissue!) and put it in my pocket so that I didn't have to use my own at home.
DD was born when I was at uni so I was skint- I went through a few periods where I had to use flannels as baby wipes because I had none. When DS arrived I knew from experience that breast pads were not going to last more than 30 seconds with the amount of milk I had flying around so used flannels.- With DD when my milk had kicked in and I was still in hospital I couldn't even wear my 32DD bra because I was enormous. 1 Midwife suggested I got DH to go into town before he came in and buy me some more bras in a FF size but we had NOOO money so another on took pity on me and we micropored the pads on so I didn't have to try and get a bra on!
Also, while pregnant with DD I couldn't afford maternity clothes so I just wore DH's trosers and rolled the legs up.
When we had our first flat it was freezing cold so on payday we put £30 on the gas meter and when it was gone that was it. We had cold washes and sat with duvet over us all the time. We had to make sure we were comfy in bed before we pulled up the 3 duvets and 6 blankets because we couldn't move afterwards.
I've done the brushing teeth with no toothpaste thing and the using samples of toiletries because I had no money.
I look back at some of the things I have done and think OMG- no wonder I never ever want to be in that position again.

Flannels and baby wipe things- not menstrual periods!

I also heard of a friend who's mum used to make her dads porridge with breast milk because they were so skint!

I've got a number of sad student memories

Having roast dinners but replacing the meat with just gravy to save money.

Buying ox liver for 10p a piece and spitting out the valves.

sleeping in my car for four weeks because I ran out of money

coming home with no ticket on the train. I got caught but my sob story was so good the guy let me off and lent me 10p to phone my folks!

    Happy days.

Oh god I've just though of another! I don't know if it still exists but about 13 years ago you used to be able to get a permit to travel for trains if you couldn't buy a ticket. We used to stick 5p in the machine to get the train to as far as we could and back home so that we could keep warm for the evening.

Trust me calves liver and ox liver are not the same!!

I realised later that the ox liver was in a section with the Chum and the Winalot.

liver in any form (apart from in my insides where it's perfectly acceptable) is gross, so are kidneys and the rest of the innards.
