Guys wearing earrings...Captain Jack Sparrow I've no problem with. Lewis Hamilton wearing two (especially when he's filmed walking his doggie ) is just so wrong.
  • I say go for it. Fight the school to the ends of the earth. Just generalising here, but i'm guessing that your son likes a bit of attention and is in the bottom half of the classes he's in. Maybe taking after his parents from years gone by? Doing this kind of look-at-me behaviour might get him a bit of noteriety that might help him to feel like a someone in the future when he's pushing shopping trolleys round an Asda car park because he wasted his time fighting this pointless discrimination cause while his friends got on with their education.

His name's not Darren is it?
Saved me a couple of minutes, thanks.
  • It saddens me how many people here think its wrong for a boy or man to have pierced ears yet its fine for a woman. Are we still in the dark ages? Please remember when women first started wearing trousers they were looked down on! We need to abolish inequality (both against men and women) and I can't think of a better place to start than in schools.

It has turned into a Chav thing for boys now though ......in the same way ridiculously large hoops for girls have. I blame My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding for making it that way. Who wants a kid looking like that?

Not sexist at all just wouldn't want my son presumed to need his face blanked out if he's caught on camera.

If they're banned for men in a workplace then they should be banned for women in the same workplace.

Are you saying we should NEVER challenge inequalities? Or maybe just not the ones you agree with?

    Very well said, Arbroath lass.

I think earrings look extremely naff on men (except Capn. J. Sparrow) and would be very happy to seem them stop wearing them.

However, I very much support equality for matters such as equal earnings and the abolition of the 'glass ceiling' and do not believe that one should pick and choose to only support equalities that one personally thinks are important.

People who belittle the concerns of others, no matter how trivial they seem to themselves are demonstrating a lack of emotional intelligence and maturity.

And whining about inconsequential little things will?

You are displaying a severe lack of emotional (and general) intelligence with that remark.

Either that or you have delusions of godhood.

Who the hell are you to decide what matters are or are not of consequence to teenage children?
People like you are what is wrong with society today. I expect you also agree with teachers marking in a 'non-threatening' green pen rather than red to avoid lowering self-esteem from a wrong answer. Or banning parents from sports day because it causes anxiety for children. Or prizes for all participants rather than the winner.

    ROFLMAO.

One of the most inept cases of a straw man argument I've seen.

Actually, I find all things you mention daft. The red/green pen one particularly so as it would only take the children a few days for the green pen to be seen, symbolically, as exactly the same as the red one.

However, making up a set of stupid beliefs in an attempt at what is, effectively, an ad hominem attack is stupid beyond belief.

Well you can't really blame them. They probably attended schools that banned guys from wearing earrings so don't view it as acceptable :rotfl: Nice and impressionable age while at school.

And whats the first thing they "teach" you? That you MUST follow the rules or you will be punished.

Tbh these types of attitudes in the school system do nothing but fuel bullying. They are setting the standard of what is acceptable and what isnt in terms of physical appearance. I may not personally like someones style, but if I don't like theirs, they probably don't like mine....why is my style right and theirs wrong? It makes life less boring....imagine if everyone dressed the same....there would be no "normal" as there would be no alternative.

I find you rather daft, generally.

School is a training ground for the adults that society wants children to become. Aside from the obvious academic subjects, social skills, discipline, adhering to rules, teamwork etc. are also all learnt. If schools are out of step with what society and business expects of those children as they become adults, the requirements won't slip or change, instead, those children will become marginalised in favour of children and immigrants who have the rights skills. Schools don't generally influence society, it's the other way round, but attempting to will more likely end up with children being failed, and failures, than any great shift in society.

    Articles like this demonstrate this:

In particular the "...young people lacked important employability skills".

Of course, this all depends on your viewpoint. My view being that we should aim for high achievement as a country and as individuals, whereas large swathes of the country prefer to aim for mediocrity.
