I understand what is being said about the wedding, the problem we have is that both of us come from large families. My Fiance is one of 8 children, with all but one of them having partners, and I have 23 Aunties and Uncles! We'd love to be able to limit the day guest to say 50, but would probably start WW3 in the process!
We're hoping to save as much as possible with everything else such as making invitations, favours, centre pieces etc ourselves.
You could have a wedding in a registry office and then have a big party at night.
Also, its your day, it doesnt matter if WW3 starts. Of course its about your wedding day, but as someone else has said, you are spending a massive chunk of your savings on the wedding when you really need them to go towards your house.0 -
Congratulations
Don't spend £6k on your wedding is my honest advice.
You can have a very good day for a lot less than that I've seen too many people financially stitch themselves up for that huge day.
Outside of the deposit for the house you'll need stamp duty, solicitors fees, a lot of odds and sods you don't expect.0 -
I agree with everyone else, £6k for a wedding, for one day is
Imagine how much lovely furnishings/furniture you could buy for that, how much DIY improvements could be made.
I read recently and cannot remember which paper that a couple had managed to get married for £1:D:D a lot of it was down to freegle, freecycle, ebay and everyone giving up their time and expertise to the couple, like the nan made the 3 tier cake, one of their friends took the photographs, her mum was an ex florist, the bridesmaids dresses were loaned from a friend who had a wedding some time earlier, the page boys outfits the same and on and on it goes, it is the most fantastic cheap happy way to get married, everyone involved, everyone helping to organize, donating their time, feeling part of it and at the end of the day no one is in debt, has had a fabulous day for very little money, perfect:D
No need for £6k extravaganza0 -
I think you'll have to accept that you can't afford to rent a house and have an expensive wedding and save a large deposit. I'd rent a flat rather than a house and scale down your wedding plans as well.0

Really didn't think 6k was such a great amount considering you read the average wedding now cost 20k+
Buying our own house is massively important, and is the priority but at the same time, I wouldn't want my fiance to not have her dream wedding. Being a typical bloke, I don't care much for flowers, fancy settings & posh grub and I'd be quite happy with a church wedding and then a good old fashioned knees up at the pub after with finger buffet, but then wouldn't most men!
Realistically what would you expect to pay for a typical church wedding, 3 course meal for 85 quests and evening reception for 200, with everything included (Dress, rings, flowers, photographer, DJ etc etc)0 -
I saw that as well, the wedding day for a quid
If I ever did get married, which is highly unlikely given that Ive been single since dinosaurs roamed the earth it would be a registry office do and then a party at night.
Can think of better ways to spend money than on the full works.
Also, you could delay the wedding for a year or two to give you more time to save if you really are determined to have a big do.0 -
My, you are a miserable lot
:rotfl:
I couldn't spend £6k on a wedding, I just don't have that kind of money myself, but it's a once in a lifetime event and a special day for the couple and everyone who wants to celebrate. It's a wedding, - you can't just invite them all to the KFC and feed them a bucket of chips.
I'm sure the weddings I've been to cost about that much, by the time you've factored in the wedding and the evening do.
One thing I don't agree with is the hen and stag weekends which cost hundreds of ££s and whose only purpose seems to be for everyone to get bladdered, but again, it's up to the people concerned.0 -

You can get reasonably priced wedding dresses on ebay or sites like preloved.
You could find someone local to do the DJing for you. There are always people who are photography students who would probably give a good discount on weddings, I know people who arent professional photographers but have a talent for it and who do weddings
As for the sit down meal for 85, thats probably where you need to start making some hard decisions.0 -

Not miserable, just realistic. Its about two people getting married, it doesnt need to be about the frills.
As for once in a lifetime event, for some people, its not.
A friend of mine was married twice within the space of 18 months and no not a bigamist, you can get divorced quicker in Scotland if both parties agree.0 -

Realistically, just quickly scanning over what you have written (one eye on the dinner:D) the amount of guests would have to be cut right back, far too many to feed, far too expensive, no wedding has to be a church, loads of guests, horse drawn carriage, £££ for the dress and the flowers and the table decorations etc etc that is all unnecesary bling, I have been to a fair few weddings and ask me what colour the napkins were? No idea, what colour flowers were decorating the hall? No idea, that is all just wasted money but at each wedding the best thing, the absolute best thing was seeing the bride and groom so very happy:D
Registry off, cut back on the guests, pub/restaurant lunch, each pay their own (as was the wedding two weeks ago, we got the menu 2 weeks before and put the order in) fantastic day, lovely to see everyone, everyone happy, no need for flash:D:D0
