It's just an example on how sometimes doing it yourself isn't as cheap as it might seem. If you got the idea, well done. ;)

We got married on a Thursday in April and saved a packet. We were only inviting family, not friends, and in my mind if someone refused to take the day off to come to our wedding, then they obviously weren't that bothered about us!

I have to take issue with this I'm afraid. Not everybody has much or any control over when they can take time off work.

Not being able to get to a friend's wedding, or not making it your absolute top priority that day, doesn't mean you don't care about them.

Totally agree. If you are a teacher or work in a school you wouldn't be able to get a weekday off work. I'm sure there are lots of other jobs where it would be the same. Or what if you had already used up your holiday allocation for that year by the time you got the invitation and there was nothing you could do about it? Doesn't mean you don't care or don't want to go.

She did later say in her post that the majority of people who were asked to the wedding didnt work.

    This is what was said

Most of our family are retired anyway and we have no one for whom taking a couple of days off would be a problem, so if someone refused then it was merely because they couldn't be bothered.

You get second hand wedding dresses on sites such as preloved and ebay as well, lots of people sell their wedding dresses but perhaps some people want to do something nice and donate them to charity, the same way people donate other clothes to charity.

Yes, I can understand where Oxfam gets secondhand dresses from but you mentioned that some were brand new with tags.

It always seems rather sad to me.

Some people just change their minds. Some might be 'last seasons dresses' or end of lines. (Some times the more upmarket shops used to donate these, if they didn't sell at discount sales) they might now sell them on ebay, who knows!.

A lot I guess are 'changed minds' and 'didn't work outs'. :(

I think some come from Bridal wear shops either moving on old stock or shop soiled.
  • I would say elope to get married and spend the rest on the house like me and my husband did. We had a lovely wedding in Vegas and invited everyone at their expense some came some didn't, when we got back to England we had a big wedding party still cost under £200 for food & lots of drink. Got family members to bring food also.

The more deposit you have the better home you can buy plus there are so many other fees when you buy like solicitors movers etc etc new furniture, decorating blah blah seriously every penny counts when you buy.
