I've not even read all the replies on here and I'm also not going to lecture you and just say yes it can be done and good for you!

We did exactly the same but the other way round, and spent £10k on the wedding - so shoot me! Yes could have done it cheaper but it was beautiful and everything I'd ever dreamed of and I wouldn't change it for the world.

FYI - yes we're in debt, but this was from honeymoon and furniture and will be paid off in 6 months. I still wouldn't change any of that either and it's worth scrimping to pay off!

Good luck to you both, I'm sure you'll have an amazing wedding and life together :)

Not really what you're saying on your own thread.

  • i would say that your 6 k wedding will end up costing closer to 8k if your not really really really strict and don't get caught up in all the !!!!!!!! that goes with the wedding

Plus it seems like your going to be buying a house with the minimum amount of deposit which is never really a good idea

Personally it depends on what you both want the most. Sometimes you simply cant have it all within the time frame that you want and so you have to sort of choose one or the other for the time being

Not everyone knows someone who can make dresses/cakes etc, granted

But there are many local businesses where I am who advertise their services on facebook pages all the time, even an Im looking for this and I can afford to spend this much would be putting feelers out as to how many people around their local area can do stuff like that

Ive known people who have made successful businesses in cake making for example, out of a hobby and not always their full time jobs, if you ask around, you might be surprised what you get

And some of those people who do photography as a hobby are actually very good at it.

I'm sure that photography students and hobbyists are very good but considering these are your wedding photographs which you have in frames for the rest of your life, most people would rather have a professional with some experience.

One of my best friends made our cake and it was amazing, but perhaps you don't realise how much these things cost. The ingredients alone for our cake cost just under £100.

We had a friend take photos at our wedding, they were fine, but you know something? I couldn't even tell you where the album is. It's in the house, it is certainly in a safe place (lol) but we don't look at them. We don't have photos of ourselves about our home. It's just not who we are. Most of our friends are the same. I can't see that it would have been different if we'd had a professional. If you're like us a photographer IS a waste. Plus it is really boring standing about having all those photos taken :rotfl:.

Uhm, not how I would ever want to start married life off with....

The thing about £6k weddings and buying a house there is always a bit more that it costs, the things that cannot be expected but if you had the ££ cushion , the 'just in case' money, the unexpected could easily be overcome and has been said before the more you put towards the mortgage the less % interest you end up paying, it really is worthwhile chucking as much money as you can at the property.

One of my friends offered to make a 3 tier wedding cake for £60, she ended up paying (£27 for the beautiful iced flowers from a cake shop for the decoration) in total £105.75p (she listed all the ingredients etc) so was well out of pocket, will never do that again, she went to the cake shop and asked how much it would cost if they had come direct to them...£250:eek: so yes, mention wedding and the cost of things just goes off the ricketscale.

We had the forensic photographer from the police do our wedding photos..
They were crap and my wife hates them..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

That happened to us. We were quoted £60 by a lady who worked for the local cake shop, but then it turned out that there was a clause in her employment contract that forbade her from doing cakes on the side. We ended up paying £300 for the same £60 cake.

I suppose we were lucky really because, apart from the cake, by avoiding using the word 'wedding' when we were organising or wedding we managed to keep costs under control. In another example, we were quoted £1000 to hire a local venue for a 'family celebration' but when they found out that the celebration was actually a wedding, the cost jumped to £3,500 for the same facilities on the same dates. They were unable to offer a plausible explanation as to why.

It wasn't a problem in the end as we got our preferred venue for free... my wife's uncle's garden. :)

OP, costs of a wedding aside, you really shouldn't count on HTB still being around in 2 or 3 years' time. Why not buy first then save for a wedding?
