A warning on Tesco Clubcard points and vouchers - 'expired' vouchers policy change
Comments
-
If you look on any of your cash vouchers there will be a 'valid until .....' date, for example the last ones sent out will say '31st Aug 2015' that is two years from date of issue.
Since you work for Tesco, perhaps you could give us all some logical reason, apart from sheer greed, why these hard earned points have to have an expiry date and why Tesco now refuse point blank to extend it?0 -

To the best of my knowledge, they have always had an 'expiry' date. Nothing new there, nor in the T & Cs - it only there refers to Tesco agreeing to resend vouchers with same date. That happens for example, in a 'mailing period' and someone's changed address - the old ones are cancelled and new ones reissued.
Also, Tesco have sent out 'reprint' vouchers - same date & codes, just in case the old ones have been lost (not everyone's on-line).
But the 'rollover' facility is there, given that vouchers have an 'expiry date' (and often people panic - because they didn't see the year only the day & Month), there is going to be a 'cut-off' date when they disappear. Strictly speaking there is no need for Tesco to keep records of expired vouchers! Currently, the only accessible expired vouchers is Aug 2013.
Moreover, it's surprising how time consuming doing several periods rollovers - I could take at least another call - so it has made it easier for callers to get answered.

How is it?
I think they have an expiry date because Tesco do not want people to be able to pay for things in full.
For example when we used our vouchers in the days of MFI they told us that when they joined the scheme they had not expected so many people to pay in full like we were, as obviously they make much less profit.0 -

How indeed?
There's no good reason whatever for any voucher, points etc having any expiry date at all. Banknotes don't have expiry dates, and if the Bank of England tried to introduce them the whole idea would be seen as ridiculous.
And yet companies like Tesco get away with it, and some people even defend the idea.
Tesco do it for one very simple reason - people forget to claim, and Tesco profit from that simple mistake. It's just the way Tesco is - a hard-nosed, aggressive, unpleasant company that tries to pretend it's the consumer's friend, whilst ripping the consumer off at every possible opportunity.0 -

To the best of my knowledge you've never criticised Tesco on MSE, which shows how pointless your signature is.0 -
I had £15 worth of vouchers expire at the end of August and due to being on holiday I'd forgotten to exchange into other deals. Sent Tesco a polite email and acknowledging it was my mistake but would be grateful if they would mind extending the life of the voucher.
Received a telephone call from Tesco confirming that they had extended the life of the vouchers by adding them to the next statement so they will in effect be valid for another 2 years.0 -

They are able to extend the validity for a period of about a month after the expiry date.
After that, it's impossible, because they don't even show on the system.0 -

That's the kind of service I have always had from Tesco anytime I have had issues - that is why I remain loyal to them. Perhaps its the tone in which the customer addresses the issue as opposed to the issue itself - manners cost nothing! Thats great news that you got another 2 years - go Tesco! :T:T:T:T:T0 -

If only that were the case. It isn't the tone - it's just pure luck that the customer remembered to contact them within a very short time of the expiry.
After that very brief period it would have been impossible to extend the validity because the Tesco CS people have been prevented from even seeing the expired points on the system - they're treated as never having existed.0 -

Confirming ......... the customer FORGOT - the responsiblity is that of the customers' - if they received their vouchers on time and had checked e-mails reminding them of expiry dates then a courteous call to Tesco to request an extension on their "hard earned" vouchers would allow the Tesco Staff to further extend them for 2 years (at their discretion) - simples
I don't think Tesco are isolated in not "honouring" expired vouchers - where do they draw the line?
I can't imagine many high street retail stores allowing you to use an expired credit note or vouchers - what would be the point in having an expiry date?0
