A warning on Tesco Clubcard points and vouchers - 'expired' vouchers policy change

Not so long ago, when Tesco had a more caring attitude to its loyal customers, it adopted a fairly relaxed approach towards vouchers that had passed their two year time limit. After all you'd spent good money with Tesco, you'd earned the vouchers, and there was no good reason why those vouchers should magically lose all their value in a puff of smoke at the 2 year point.
You could phone the Clubcard team, and they'd quite happily carry forward the points that would have been lost to the next quarter, effectively giving the voucher at least another two years' life.
Try that now, however, and you'll find it's no longer possible. The staff on the Clubcard team have been stopped from doing it by those nice Tesco bosses (you know - the ones who tell you how 'every little helps'). Even worse - they have no access to your points and voucher history beyond the 2 year point, so they can't even tell you how much you've lost.
You'd think, wouldn't you, that losing all the trade they're already losing to Aldi and Lidl (because their prices are so much lower for goods of the same or better quality, made by the same suppliers) that they'd be keen to keep their Clubcard customers happy by allowing the revalidation that used to be allowed. But not a bit of it - once your voucher's expired, that's it. You'll never see it again, despite the money you spent to get it. Tesco just pockets it.
So this is by way of a warning. If you must shop at Tesco (despite savings of around 30% for much the same thing at Aldi and Lidl) watch those vouchers carefully. Don't save them up as you might once have done, expecting them to be extended at the 2 year point. That will no longer happen.
Thanks Tesco - and thanks, too, for not bothering to tell anyone about the change of policy in the last year or so. So spend all those vouchers. If you don't, Tesco will pocket your money.

Just wondering why you shop at tescos if aldi are so much cheaper???? I personally think 2 yrs is sufficient & it was generous of them to extend past any expiry date...0

Thank you. I don't often change up my vouchers since they started asking you to stipulate which restaurant etc you want to use so I'd better go check the dates on my remaining ones!
ETA: Just found a few due to expire the end of this month so I'm glad I checked! :T“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

I don't much shop at Tesco any more, actually. Aldi and Waitrose provide the perfect combination. Still getting points from petrol, though, and there are still some vouchers from the past.
Not sure I can see why it was 'generous' of Tesco under the old policy to let me keep my own money.
This was more of a warning to other people than anything else.0 -

Tesco didn't need to tell anyone - because, the T & Cs were still the same.
To remind you to use vouchers that were in danger of running out of date.
Tesco sent out reminder emails, sent out 'reprint' vouchers (though some people tried to use both).
Even if CC had access to some expired vouchers, you'd have some people who 'found' even older ones .....
I was surprised that anything could be done with them, personally if they were mine - I've would have thrown them away - out of date.
As has already been said - two years is plenty of time to use them, if you want to save them - then have the oldest ones on top.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
Having not seen the previous message I just rang Tesco about having them replaced as I had read that you could . I said that I had seen on Martin's Money saving that they could be replaced, the reply was as soon as it was reported there they stopped it. I asked could they not accept them for charity & the answer was no Thanks a lot Tesco , every little would have helped .0

But then you would say that wouldn't you? Bearing in mind you work for them, you're hardly likely to spout off on a public forum about how much Tesco's customer service stinks.0 -
oldernotwiser:
It's not a question of CC not even being able to do it for charity!
They do not have access to expired vouchers.
Hence, they have no way of knowing what's happened to them before - no one does.
So, it's not CC being **** - they are just not able to.
Coopdivi:
Yes, as you've noticed I do work for Tesco, but I post here (not at Tesco's request) to help others here - I try to be informative, though I can't obviously guarantee it'll be the info you want!
It is a 'public forum' yes, but then again it is anonymous!!
So what part of my comments 'stink'!?
Incidentally, if you look in the 'Discounts codes section - there is a long standing thread there about 'expired vouchers' started in 2006 .I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -

I'm interested in your comments, given that you work for Tesco. I agree that the T&C did not change - but the longstanding practice of allowing expired vouchers to be renewed certainly did change. Not long ago the CS people could and would renew them, but now they won't - and can't - because the system doesn't even allow them to view expired vouchers.
This is a clear policy change by Tesco, and should have been made clear to customers.
As for two years being 'plenty of time' I have to disagree with you. The law (Limitation Act, 1980) considers six years to be the normal time limit for most contractual issues, and it's only Tesco's restrictive T&Cs that cause that to be cut back to 2 years. Plenty of people want to save these vouchers for more than 2 years, and the old policy took account of that. The new policy is just a cynical attempt by Tesco to save itself money at the expense of its customers.
As I said, those customers earned the money, and there's no reason at all (apart from sheer greed by Tesco) for Tesco to claw it back again.0
