PS We sent a cheque as Barclays wanted £20 to do a BACS transfer. Now that is robbery.

Are you sure it was a BACS transfer? All our BACS transfers have been free of charge, it is CHAPS that usually attracts a fee of about £20ish.

I have transferred from Sainsbury's to halifax Web Savers. It was no different as a transfer to my current account.

All you need is the sort code and account number.

I've just had all my AML documents back, activated my online access and done a test transfer from my A&L current account. We will see how long it takes to get through the banking system.

I wanted to open it as well, but when I tried to apply, because I've only been at my current address for 2 months and my previous address was in Switzerland, it didn't let me put a foreign address.
I mailed them with this question and was told to contact the Helpdesk for online banking. The guy was extremely nice, said he didn't know how to solve it but was going to ask. He returned after a couple of minutes, saying he'd learnt something new as well, and I should just put the bank's own address as "previous address". Did that, and have just received the online bank activation code and the account number+sort code.
I've activated my account, but I'll only transfer money once it's fully active, although maybe I'll try the £5 suggestion...
They do say that because the account has been so successful, the identity letter will take a while.

Anybody knows if all I need to do is sign and maybe send a copy of passport or something?

They will try to verify you electronically first. If they can't, they have to ask for 2 proofs of name, one showing your full name, and 1 proof of current address, from 3 different sources. The letter will include a leaflet with a list of sutable documents. I used my driving licence for full name, a tax code notification for name and a credit card bill for my current address.

Its a nuisance, but acceptable in view of the alternative.

I've just got the letter and they ask for the original documents:eek:

Yeah, right, as if I'd post my passport...

I've just opened an ISA with NS&I and the letter arrived today as well, and in there they specifically say not to send the originals, just certified copies.
So I'm going to call Sainsbury's and ask if they accept certified copies, otherwise it's bye bye account. At least I didn't deposit anything :/

There are alternatives to sending your passport ScarletBea, they surely haven't insisted on that.

Hubby and I opened Sainsbury accounts, he was verified electronically but I wasn't. I think I sent a utility bill (probably rates), a recent credit card bill and a letter from the DSS, all obviously with my name on. I had no problems with these. From what I remember there is a list of suggestions as to what can be sent in. I photocopied each of the things I sent in but as the bills had been paid anyway nothing was mega important if they had been lost in the post. For peace of mind you could sent recorded delivery for an extra 65p.

I wasn't prepared to post my passport either, but there was quite a long list of suitable alternatives.

Of course, they don't have branches that you can take them into, like I was able to do for my Halifax One card.

BTW, my documents were sent back very promptly by Recorded Delivery.

I called them, and yes, I can send instead certified photocopies.
Since I work with lots of certified accountants, it's easy for me to get the certification :)

But on the instructions they say specifically to send the original documents, that's why I got annoyed.

My main problem is that I really don't have much alternatives to passport, driver's licence and bank statement. I still haven't received any utility bill, or council tax bill (have just sent my information to the council)., and my home phone's in my partner's name.
Oh, I've just noticed that I can send the TV license for proof of address! Good, because then I can use the bank statement for proof of name name and no need to send my (still) swiss driver's licence.
